What Happens To Your Brain And Body When You Do Yoga Regularly
Over 36 million Americans practice yoga. Studies show it can improve flexibility, which in turn can help treat and prevent back pain. Yoga has also been shown to lower inflammation, which is linked to serious issues like cardiovascular disease and cancer. Studies also suggest it might reduce stress by interfering with your brain’s ability to release stress hormones.
Following is a transcript of the video:
Over 36 million Americans practice yoga, which really can have profound health effects on your body and brain. Studies show yoga can improve flexibility, which in turn can prevent and treat back pain. Not to mention, it lowers inflammation in the body, which has been linked to serious issues like cardiovascular disease. And like other forms of exercise, yoga may reduce stress.
This year is the year that you start doing yoga, and I mean for real this time. You're going to join the 36 million-plus Americans who have taken up this beautiful practice, connecting yourself with a millennia-old tradition and helping you flush out those nasty toxins, or, you know, probably not.
Before you grab a mat, here's what yoga really does to your body and brain. First of all, yoga comes in many, many different styles, but generally speaking, it involves some amount of stretching and meditation. Now, despite what you may have read, there's no scientific evidence to support the idea that yoga will flush out toxins from your colon or anywhere else. But that doesn't mean these techniques can't help your body in many other ways.
Take back pain for instance. An estimated 80% of Americans will suffer from back pain at one point in their lives. But one study found that after just six to 12 yoga sessions, participants reported significantly less pain in their lower back. That's because certain yoga poses stretch out your hamstrings, which, when they're too tight, can yank on your hip flexors and strain your lower back. But the more you practice yoga, the more flexible your hamstrings get.
For example, in a 2015 study, women practiced a type of hatha yoga, which involves positions like downward dog and triangle pose. They practiced 90 minutes each week for around 16 weeks straight. And by the last week, they could reach four centimeters closer to their toes than before thanks to those loose hamstrings. Now, if you're also meditating during those yoga sessions, the flexibility might not be the only benefit. After seven to 16 weeks of meditative activities, participants in one study saw a huge drop in C-reactive proteins in their blood. Those proteins are linked to inflammation, which, when you're overly stressed, can kick into overdrive. And over time, that inflammation may contribute to serious illnesses like cardiovascular disease and cancer. That's where yoga's meditative qualities can help.
Researchers suspect that yoga may reduce stress by interfering with the central nervous system's ability to release stress hormones. Plus, studies show that meditation-focused types of yoga, like yoga asana, boost levels of feel-good hormones like oxytocin in the brain. Plus, yoga is an exercise, and exercise in and of itself is a stress reliever. In fact, the US Department of Health and Human Services recommends two and a half to five hours a week of light to moderate exercise.
That can include workouts like yoga, brisk walking, or swimming. And to be fair, any amount of regular exercise is most likely going to reduce anxiety, elevate mood, and improve sleep and self-esteem. So while yoga might have an edge in the flexibility department and mindfulness department, there are plenty of other activities you can try to get fit. But as long as it gets you moving and maybe gives you some new friends, why not give it a try?

Work Life Balance Part 01 - Balance of Mind & Body | Yoga By Lara Abiesheikh
Work Life Balance Part 01 - Balance of Mind & Body | Yoga By Lara Abiesheikh
Venkatramani talks about the need for balance of body and mind in the pursuit of self- actualisation by an individual.
Pain in the body or depression in the mind drives us to resort to medicines and chemicals. Venkatramani suggests yoga as a panacea for these problems and refers to the long and healthy life of yogis and siddhars in olden days who practiced yoga.
Venkatramani introduces yoga guru Shri Lara Abiesheikh who has had a passion from a young age to learn yoga. He finds his guru Shri Desikachar at Krishnamacharya yoga mandiram who was impressed at his yoga postures which according to him resembled his father Shrii Krishnamacharya’s. Lara pursued his training with Shri Desikachar for 10 years.
Venkatramani asks Lara to state the best quality of his Guru that he was impressed with. To this Lara states that the ability to customise a yoga practice to suit the need of an individual and using breath and tools of breath in the most effective way were his unique ability.
To the question what is Hatha yoga he explained that it is working with the body.He said that yoga and yoga therapy are different. Everyone can do yoga postures but one seeking therapy cannot do all postures.
Venkatramani acclaimed Lara’s quality of curing or solving a problem of an individual with a smile. Lara explains a case of a gentleman who had an issue of numbness in his fingers and could not even sign a cheque. He had this problem for about four years when he met Lara. he was given treatment of varma therapy and yoga therapy and a change in his diet. In two weeks the person found cure for his problem and was extremely happy.
Lara explained how yoga can help sports people in bringing flexibility to the body and calmness to mind and stated his experience with the indian cricket team
To a question about practice of suryanamaskara he explained that it may not suit certain type of bodies and may cause harm more than benefit
Venkatramani asked a question if introduction of yoga at an young age for school children can help in posture correction and help them lead a healthy life and face the world with more confidence Lara stated that to have yoga in the curriculum would be essential. He related his experience of teaching yoga in a school for one year which brought positive changes in the children who practiced.
Lara explained how breathing in yoga postures yielded quicker results. He reiterated the importance of breathing as it helps to think before one gets into action. He related his experience of teaching yoga to Vellore prison inmates who had committed crimes without thinking.
He also quoted Yoga sutra ‘citta vritti nirodha.’ yoga helps to remove the fluctuations of mind and helps in clear thinking.
People working in the IT industry are constantly under work pressure and have an erratic schedule of sleep and food. This affects their health. Yoga practice for about 20 minutes everyday can prevent health issues.
He explained his methodology of teaching yoga therapeutically to a person with health problem and then teach a general yoga practice to maintain fitness and good health.
Therefore yoga can be preventive and curative solution.

How to balance work and personal life - Work life balance
Only 1% do this to balance work and personal life.
You need to prioritise in this order:
Me - 1st
Family - 2nd
Work - 3rd
And the first, me, is the most important one. It’s your foundation. When you build a house, you start with the foundation, right. It’s exactly the same with your life. You start with yourself. Focus on developing yourself. Build up yourself everyday. If you build up yourself with lots of energy, you will be able to tackle anything in your life. You will be able to build anything in your life. If you’re lacking energy, you won’t have any energy to put out into the world and manifest your dreams. So you need to start prioritising self development and self growth. And I know what you’ll say, but I don’t have time for that I’m busy.
Busy is a bad belief too. It’s so imprinted into our minds, everyone is busy, when they aren’t really. Most people are just wasting their lives being busy. You’re not busy. You believe you’re busy and so you think you’re busy and that manifests into your life. Your reality becomes that you’re busy, when you’re actually not. So first let’s erase that belief. Imagine you’re busy in front you, imagine you have a big eraser in your hand and let’s just wipe that away. You are not busy. You just have things to do in your calendar, but you’re not busy. And now, say after me, I have time for myself. I choose to have time for myself. I choose to put time away for my own personal growth. Okay, great You’re now ready for the next step.
The next step is to write down into your calendar, 1h of personal growth time for yourself and I recommend you to do it in the morning. So take out your calendar now. Put in 1h in the morning now. Write it down. I want to get up in the morning, as early as you need to before everyone else wakes up. And you are going to do it. You are going to get up in the morning and give yourself, give yourself 1h of love. That’s how you truly love yourself. By taking care of yourself first. By putting the time and energy to build up yourself every morning.
I want you to do 20 min of personal growth reading or watching a video that will develop you in some way. It can be anything that will evolve, develop you as a person. I don’t care if it’s a spiritual book you read or if you watch a business coaching video. I want you to do that for 20 min when you wake up. Then you’ll exercise for 20 min and it could be any exercise you enjoy doing in the morning. Gift yourself, nourish your body, take care of your body first thing in the morning. I want you to workout, or do yoga, or swimming, whatever makes you feel good, move your body for 20 min every morning. And then I want you to do 20 min of meditation with positive affirmations and visualisations of your future. I want you to gift yourself with positive peaceful and happy thoughts first thing in the morning and always start your day with manifesting your goals and dreams.
So basically, I want you to do
20 minutes of reading or watching self development content
20 minutes of exercise
20 minutes of meditation
This is all you have to do, to change your life completely. It’s very simple, you will add personal growth programming to yourself in the morning, you will add exercise and you will manifest your future in your morning meditation. And why do I recommend you to do it in the morning? It’s because the energy is best in the morning. If you look at rituals done in monasteries, churches and ashrams, they all meditate or pray early in the morning. You will get the most power and energy in the morning and manifesting in the morning is very very powerful. So give yourself this time, just do it, I promise you, simply try this out for a week and see the difference in your life. I have practised this morning routine. This is also a very powerful way of restoring your energy and adding energy to your energy body. Doing a morning practice like this will strengthen you and prepare you for the hardest challenges in life. When you face a challenge in life, your energy levels tend to deplete and go down, so if you have a lot of energy stored, you’ll be okay when things happen. So make sure that you have some kind of practice that gives you more energy, because one day when something happens, you don’t want to completely deplete yourself of energy. So, make sure to raise your vibrations and energy everyday.

FREE Guide: Start a Private Practice in Counseling:
The topic of self-care in private practice has come up so many times in my personal life and hearing from you all that I know I’m long overdue to dedicate an entire video to the topic. In this video, I share my top tips for how to prioritize self-care in private practice.
This video is geared for therapists of all kinds, including psychologists, MFTs, LPCCs, social workers, and others in the clinical counseling field.
Welcome to Private Practice Skills! I’m Dr. Marie Fang, psychologist in private practice. I post videos offering tools I learned the hard way about starting and growing private practice so that you don’t have to.

Okay, so first let’s be clear about what I mean when I say self-care. I feel like often people have the impression that it means taking a spa day or going on vacation. And though those items are awesome (and I could use a vacation about now), self-care means something so much bigger than having those nice pampering moments.
At it’s core, self-care is about taking a conscious, active role in protecting our wellbeing and improving our overall health.
It follows, then, that prioritizing self-care in private practice involves asking ourselves what we need in order to protect and improve our wellbeing, and taking intentional steps to move towards that.
Here’s the thing: I think so many people approach self-care in completely the wrong way. So often we work ourselves into the ground and we view self-care as all the work we do to try to undo the exhaustion of life.
Though there’s absolutely a place for that and I too need my R&R to restore my soul after hard work, the best tips I have for self-care are centered around building a work life that you love so that you don’t feel completely exhausted by the end of a work day.
Here are my top tips for practicing self-care in private practice:
1. Choose a Niche you Love.
Normally we talk about finding your niche as a marketing strategy, which it completely is. But for me I’ve found that working within my niche also allows me to feel energized in the work that I do. By being selective about only working with people whom I really enjoy supporting, I find that I’m usually more energized at the end of each session than I felt going into it.
2. Set Firm Boundaries.
If someone pushes on my boundaries and I let my boundaries waiver, I’ve found that I tend to start declining in my energy level and I can start heading towards burnout. If I’m meeting with a client that I’m finding tires me out, often it’s a sign that I’m letting a boundary slide: whether it be not ending sessions on time, communicating through email too frequently between sessions, or somehow finding myself working harder than the client. Knowing where your boundaries are and holding to them can make all the difference.
3. Charge What You’re Worth.
This is SO important. If I practiced everything else on this list but I undercharged, I would definitely feel it in a huge way. Be sure to charge what you’re worth in order to help validate the work that you do and also to allow you to work less while earning the same income.
4. Find Support.
I’m talking ALL kinds of support. Working in private practice can become isolating if we don’t seek out the support we need from all directions. Make sure you’re plugged in with a supportive consultation group, that you have some loved ones who understand the nature of the work that you do, and that you have a low threshold for choosing to seek out counseling for yourself. With all of these supports in place, I feel validated and I also have enough people looking out for me to help me redirect if I’m headed in an unhealthy direction.
Of course as always, there are many more ways to practice self-care beyond these tips, but I’ve found that with these four items in place, most days are filled with joy and I come home feeling energized.
I hope you found these tips helpful as you practice self-care in your private practice. Let me know in the comments what strategies you use for self-care, and until next time, from one therapist to another: I wish you well!
