Arthritis dates back to prehistoric times and is seen all through the ages in the joints of the skeleton remains.
Most of you will Ahave problems with your joints and it may be arthritis. Arthritis is associated with aging but it is not caused because you are aging. Arthritis is caused by the body not been fed the proper nutrients that keep your joints health and free of wear and tear.
There are plenty of joints in your body and typically there are only specific joints that have arthritic pain. Those are the ones that you use frequently. For men it is
knees, spine, and feet. For women it is fingers, hands, knees, and spine.
Arthritis means inflammation of the joint. When your joints have bone-to-bone contact and grind against each other that area becomes swollen and inflamed.
There are two main type of arthritis – osteoarthritis and rheumatoid – and others that are less known.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis means inflammation of the bony part of your joint. As your joints move against each other, the protective coating and surrounding material – membranes, oil sacs, cartilage – wear down. This wear down occurs when the joints see excess activity.
Normally you would not expect to see this wear down condition since there are many joints that see excess activity and don’t become inflamed or arthritic. There millions of people who don’t get arthritis, yet the use their joints are used just as much and perhaps even more. Then there are people who don’t use their joint to excess and still get arthritis.
So the actual cause of arthritis is more than excess activity.
The cause of arthritis has come down to a single or combination of nutritional deficiencies, excess joint activity, and emotional issues.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid means "similar to flowing pain." It is an autoimmune disease where good cell and tissue are attack by the immune system. Rheumatoid first affects the joint membranes and later the bone structure at the joint. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs in people of all ages. As this arthritis progresses it can becomes crippling.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a recent disease, which appeared at the turn of the 20th Century. Its cause can be associated with diet where the balance of the joint structure receives chemicals that destroy its balanced condition.
Gouty Arthritis
Gout is a disease where uric acid deposits in the joints of feet and legs. When the body has an excess of uric acid, which it can’t eliminate through normal channels of elimination- the kidney – the uric acid settles in the joints and soft tissue causing pain.
Gout is more common with men, people with high blood pressure, alcoholics, diabetics, and obesity. Gout means drop. It was thought by Romans that gout was caused by poisonous crystals coming from the blood, drop by drop, and depositing in the toes.
There is some evidence that gout is related to the amount of wine that is drunk with the meal. This put an extra strain on the liver that tries to detoxify the wine and the meal at the same time. Result is the liver is unable to detoxify the complete meal.
Other Types of Arthritis
There are other types of arthritis. These account for a small amount of the types of arthritis that most people have. Here is the list:
Bursitis – inflammation of the shoulder joints and muscles.
Neuritis – is know as rheumatism of your nerves. When the sheaths of your nerves dry out you have neuritis
Myositis - pain that comes from working hard and muscles have friction between them.
Fibrositis – is when your connective tissue become inflamed Lumbago – occurs before you get arthritis of the spine.

What are the different types of arthritis?
Dr Taher Mahmud, expert consultant rheumatologist and director of the London Osteoporosis Clinic, explains what types of arthritis there are, and how they can be diagnosed and treated.
The two main categories of arthritis are:
1. Inflammatory arthritis
2. Osteoarthritis
Each type has specific features. For example, osteoarthritis is usually more likely to affect the larger joints, and rheumatoid arthritis often affects the small joints, of the hand for example.

If you feel pain and stiffness in your body or have trouble moving around, you might have arthritis. Most kinds of arthritis cause pain and swelling in your joints. Joints are places where two bones meet, such as your elbow or knee. Over time, a swollen joint can become severely damaged. Some kinds of arthritis can also cause problems in your organs, such as your eyes or skin.
Types of arthritis include
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It's often related to aging or to an injury.
Autoimmune arthritis happens when your body's immune system attacks healthy cells in your body by mistake. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of this kind of arthritis. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is a form of the disease that happens in children.
Infectious arthritis is an infection that has spread from another part of the body to the joint.
Psoriatic arthritis affects people with psoriasis.
Gout is a painful type of arthritis that happens when too much uric acid builds up in the body. It often starts in the big toe.

Arthritis of the Fingers
Diagnosing arthritis of the fingers can be difficult. Arthritis can affect any joint in the body but it is commonly seen in the joints of the fingers. The different types of arthritis and the pattern of joint involvement include osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gouty arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis. Heberden’s nodes are hard or bony swellings that can develop in the distal interphalangeal joints (DIP) and may or may not be painful. Heberden’s nodes are caused by the formation of osteophytes due to repeated trauma at the joint and usually occurs during middle age. Bouchard’s nodes are bony growths that can form on the proximal interphalangeal joints of the finger (PIP). Bouchard’s nodes, like Heberden’s nodes, may or may not be painful. Bouchard’s nodes are typically associated with limited motion of the affected joint. Mucous cysts are small, fluid-filled sacs that form between the DIP joint of the finger and the bottom of the fingernail. The best treatment is surgical excision of the cyst and removal of the underlying osteophyte to decrease the risk of recurrence. It is an anti-inflammatory form of arthritis, and it is sometimes mistaken for osteoarthritis. Dactylitis is also referred to as “sausage digit”. It is inflammation of the entire digit. Sausage fingers is a major finding of psoriatic arthritis. Nail pitting is small depressions in the finger nails, and it is most common in people who have psoriasis. Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that is sometimes called “gouty arthritis”. Gouty arthritis will mimic infection and may develop in people who have high levels of uric acid in the blood. The uric acid can form needle like crystals in the joint and cause pain, tenderness, swelling, and tenosynovitis. Periarticular erosions seen on x-ray may also be present with gout of the finger joints. Periarticular erosions are usually multiple and bilateral with sclerotic borders. In juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, it is ANA positive in 30% of the time. Rheumatoid factor is negative in a child and later on it may become positive, and there is shortened digits. Polyarticular rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis that affects five or more joints; it is polyarticular in about 30%. Pauciarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis that affects less than five joints; it is pauciarticular in about 50%. In pauciarticular onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis, check the iris of the eye for iridocyclitis. In polyarticular rheumatoid arthritis, check cervical spine for subaxial instability. Rheumatoid arthritis of the hand occurs more in females than in males. Rheumatoid arthritis has spontaneous remissions and exacerbations. The disease can have a systemic nature. Rheumatoid arthritis is typically poly-articular, bilateral and symmetrical, and most commonly affects the hands and feet. The patient complains of pain and stiffness of the joints, especially in the morning (morning stiffness). X-rays show periarticular erosions at the time of diagnosis. Osteopenia and minimal osteophyte formation favor the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. Early (acute) rheumatoid arthritis has symptoms of hot, swollen, tender joints (synovitis). Complicated rheumatoid arthritis has symptoms of digital vasculitis, ecchymosis, skin atrophy, and nodules. Advanced rheumatoid arthritis has symptoms of swelling of the MCP joint, lateral slippage of extensor tendons and tendon ruptures, ulnar deviation of fingers, and x-ray shows destruction of the MCP joints with subluxation, ulnar deviation, and wrist destruction. Finger deformities include mallet finger, boutonniere, and swan neck. The thumb is also involved. These changes occur due to proliferation, inflammation and hypertrophy of the synovium. Involvement of the distal radioulnar joint is usually associated with rupture of the extensor digiti minimi.

Arthritis Of The Fingers types and patterns - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim
Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes conditions associated with arthritis of the fingers.
Diagnosing arthritis of the finger can is difficult. Arthritis can affect any joint in the body but it is commonly seen in the joints of the fingers. There are different types of arthritis and the pattern of joint involvement:
1- Generalized osteoarthritis:
Heberden’s nodes: Heberden's nodes are hard or bony swellings that can develop in the distal interphalangeal joints (DIP) and may or not be painful. Heberden’s nodes are caused by the formation of osteophytes due to repeated trauma at the joint and usually occurs during middle age.
Bouchard’s nodes: Bouchard's nodes are bony growths that can form on the proximal interphalangeal joints of the finger (PIP). Bouchard’s nodes, like Heberden’s node, may or may not be painful. Bouchard’s nodes are typically associated with limited motion of the affected joint.
Mucous cyst: small, fluid-filled sacs that form between the DIP joint of the finger and the bottom of the fingernail. The best treatment is surgical excision of the cyst and removal of the underlying osteophyte to decrease the risk of recurrence.
2- Psoriasis: it is an inflammatory form of arthritis and sometimes confused with osteoarthritis. Dactylitis is also referred to as “sausage digit”. It is inflammation of the entire digit. Sausage finger is a major finding of psoriatic arthritis.
Nail pitting is small depressions in the finger nails and it is most common in people who have psoriasis.
3- Gout: gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that is sometimes called “gouty arthritis”. Polyarticular rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis that affects five or more joints. Polyarticular in about 30%.
Pauciarticular onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis that affects less than five joints. Pauciarticular in about 50%. In pauciarticular onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis, check the iris of the eye for iridocyclitis.

The Type of Arthritis that Keeps You Up All Night | Gout
Gout may be triggered by an increasing level of uric acid in our body. It guarantees an intense pain usually at the big toe joints and is more likely to flare at night (approximately 2.4 times more frequent than the daytime). This is because the concentration of uric acid increases while we're sleeping. While asleep, through breathing and sweating, our body loses moisture. Less water content in the blood equals higher concentration of uric acid and may lead to hyperuricemia, the precursor to gout.
Holding our breath while sleeping is out of the option so the other factor that we can control to manage our uric acid level is through diet. Avoid eating a diet rich in red meat and seafood with high purine content. It's also highly risky to consume alcohol and beverages sweetened with fruit sugar. Further treatment includes several types of drugs that can block the uric acid production such as Allopurinol and Febuxostat.

The main joint of the shoulder, commonly referred to as THE shoulder joint, is the joint between the head of the humerus - the upper arm bone, and the glenoid cavity of the scapula -the shoulder blade. This is a ball-and-socket type of joint.
Shoulder arthritis refers to loss of cartilage on the surface of the humeral head and the glenoid of the shoulder joint. The two bones rub against each other and produce pain, stiffness and difficulty moving an arm.
Types of shoulder arthritis include:
Osteoarthritis - also called degenerative joint disease - is the wear and tear condition of the joint, commonly due to old age. Osteoarthritis is characterized by loss of cartilage, bone spurring and NO major inflammation.
Rheumatoid arthritis – is a result of inflammation of the synovium - the membrane that encloses the joint. Inflammation brings in the cells of the immune system, whose inflammatory chemicals damage and destroy the joint. It is not clear how rheumatoid arthritis starts but genetic predisposition together with infection of the joint are likely to be among the causes.
Rotator cuff arthropathy or cuff tear arthropathy is shoulder arthritis AS A RESULT and IN A SETTING of rotator cuff tears. Rotator cuff muscles hold the ball and the socket together and prevent the humeral head from moving out of the socket when the person raises an arm. In people with torn rotator cuff, the head of the humerus moves upwards and rub onto the acromion. This causes damages to the covering cartilage and eventually arthritis. Combination of cuff tear and arthritis is a devastating condition that seriously impairs functions of the shoulder joint.
Post-traumatic arthritis – is arthritis that develops after physical injury to the joint.
Chondrolysis - sudden loss of cartilage that happens occasionally after a shoulder surgery, commonly seen in association with infusion of local anesthetics into the joint for pain management.

Arthritis Advice: Nutrition part 1 - What to eat
The old saying “you are what you eat” is true: the food we eat gives us the fuel and the building blocks we need to be healthy, stay active and feel good.
Research shows that what you eat has a profound impact on your overall health and wellness – including your ability to cope with arthritis. At the same time, the way you approach food and cooking can make it easier or harder to stick to a healthy diet.
In these Arthritis Advice videos, registered dietitian Kim Arrey walks through guidelines for healthy eating that can help you better manage your arthritis, and some suggestions for how to approach meal planning and food preparation to accommodate arthritis limitations.

Pain in the Neck Arthritis
When some people complain about a pain in the neck, they really mean it.
Neck arthritis is very common presentation for primary care physicians and for spine surgeons, says Dr. Jon Kimball, an orthopedic surgeon on Lee Memorial Health System's medical staff.
Fifty million Americans have some form of arthritis; it's frequently related to years of wear and tear. Not quite as common as in the hip or knee, neck arthritis tends to sneak up on people.
Arthritis can present any number of ways in the neck. Stiffness is one of the more common ones but many people play it off as maybe that they slept wrong. After the problems become more constant or more bothersome and then they seek care and then they find out that they have arthritis and most likely have had it for many years, says Dr. Kimball.
Stiff neck is a prime symptom but not the only symptom.
Other symptoms are radiating pain into the arms or legs, balance changes, handwriting or coordination changes, or it can be things that you might not necessarily associate with neck arthritis such as headaches and muscle spasms, says Dr. Kimball.
Because the neck holds some of our body's most prime real estate, people are very cautious about how they treat it. The earlier they see a doctor the more likely they'll be able to hold their head up high.
With our understanding of the process of neck arthritis, we can do interventions, whether its surgery, whether its injections, very safely and hopefully improve their quality of life, says Dr. Kimball.
The key is to use your head and seek a diagnosis if you have frequent neck stiffness that may include radiating pain into the arms.
