Curious about Tai Chi but running short on time and patience to make an in depth research of your own? Here is a simple but accurate article on the topic of Tai Chi sparring. It's organized and easy to digest.
Tai Chi, also known as Tai Chi Chuan (taijiguan) or Taiji, is commonly translated as Supreme Ultimate Fist and is known throughout the world as a Chinese martial art that combines the principles of self defense with the mental and physical fitness. This art is practiced by millions of people these days for several purposes, including self defense and for its health benefits.
Sparring is involved in basic Tai Chi practice. Tai Chi sparring is in fact one of the most important stages of this ancient martial art. As noted in most resources, Tai Chi sparring is strongly considered as the only way to teach students of the art the importance of self defense, distance and speed.
Tai Chi sparring is practiced at a slow, meditative pace. According to its proponents, the slow and continuous movements are generally designed to impart the powerful physical skills of the sparrer, as well as to stimulate the flow of energy within the body. This slow, meditative pace involved in Tai Chi sparring also helps to develop balance, coordination of breath and movement, concentration and relaxation. Simply, Tai Chi sparring teaches you how to move easily without tension in order that your mind and body can function smoothly. I think this a great health benefit.
There are three major levels of training involved in Tai Chi sparring. The first has something to do with postures; the second with self defense applications; and the third with coordination of breath with movement.
In terms of posture, the Tai Chi sparring training primarily teaches you the right postures. What I am actually talking about here is where exactly to place the hands and feet when sparring. The training also includes the fundamental shape of the movement, including the transitions between these movements. According to some Tai Chi sparring experts, it is through the mastery of the right postures that the student can develop an insight into the nature of flexible strength. This level, however, requires long and diligent practice in order to master.
The next level of Tai Chi sparring involves understanding of the energetic and self defense applications. In the first place, Tai Chi sparring is viewed as an energy exercise. This notion perhaps stemmed from the fact that when practicing Tai Chi sparring, you are calming and energizing your body.
How does Tai Chi do this? First, Tai Chi sparring eliminates the impurities caused by tension, and then it rouses energy to flow through the body. It is this flow of energy that actually cleanses the entire body.
In terms of self defense applications, Tai Chi sparring simply teaches you to understand every move involved in the practice. The general rule here is that every move can be done at three levels, which is high, middle and low. Aside from these levels, the movements can also be performed in five directions, involving left, right, back, forward and center. For many Tai Chi practitioners, it is very vital that every sparrer understand these applications so as to keep movements precise.
Finally, Tai Chi sparring involves coordination of the breath as well as the movements. What is usually considered in training is that you inhale with movements that lift or roll back, and in turn exhale with movements that press or sink. However, it is very important to note that in Tai Chi not every move will require a full breath. The coordination between the breath and movement is something that happens slowly and in unexpected ways. In the end, your body will find its own breathing rhythm.
I hope you enjoyed reading this article. There is, indeed, a lot to learn about this topic, or even a lot to learn about the world. There’s always something new to discover!

Youngster tries to kick 50 year old Tai Chi teacher...
While Richard Clear was showing one of our basic Tai Chi kick slipping drills for a class full of new students, a martial artist from a rival school in the area insisted that Richard demonstrate at full speed and power. Although the young man was somewhat hostile, Sigung Clear obliged him and continued to teach the class while the fellow did his best to land his shots. You can see that Richard did not let it get in the way of explaining the drill and why it is useful.
This is just one basic drill we use for beginners, not an application in its own right. The drill develops the ability to shed hits without taking impact into you. It is meant to be practiced slowly until learned well, and then added in with a lot of other body qualities and fighting strategies.
After several attempts (which must have been frustrating), the visitor tried to get a little more fancy. You can see he comes in as if to grab or strike with his hands, even though he asked to see it with a kick. Unfortunately we were not set up to film on this night. The footage you see was captured on camera phones from the students who were present. The best angle on the action was in the mirror. Afterwards he denied that he had been hit on the head, so we've slowed it down and zoomed in to show you the little tap this fellow got as a warning.
As you can see the young man only wanted to play the kicker. He did not want to try the drill in the role of the defender, even at slow speeds. He complained that this skill alone would not work in a fighting situation. He is right about that, as this is only one small part of the fighting method we use. We asked him to stick around for light sparring with the students so that he could see it used in full context, but he declined and instantly decided to pack up his things and leave.

This particular drill is on Volume 1A of our course. To learn this skill -- and a whole bunch of other amazing things -- you can get it at:

The Fighting Art of Tai Chi
There's a strange trend online of people posting how they think Tai Chi should be used in a fight. The problem is, we haven't seen one video yet that even comes close to the reality of it.
Here's another short clip of Sigung Richard Clear demonstrating how Tai Chi is really used to fight.
Notice that it's not just kickboxing with a few Tai Chi principles thrown in. Tai Chi is a complete fighting method, and when done right it is lethal.
This was taken from our demonstration at the Tai Chi Gala. We had a blast again this time, and we're already looking forward to returning next year!
Sigung Richard Clear is dedicated to demystifying the art of Tai Chi. Sign up for our newsletter to receive updates on our video series and online courses. When you register, you will receive our renowned Practical Guide to Internal Power (a 6 month course) absolutely free.

Later warriors learn this to reached the highest level of combat understanding. Tai Chi is known to have 5 styles of form: Chen, Yang, Wu, Sun Ng. The most practiced worldwide today is the Yang Style for health benefit reasons. Tai Chi is sometimes translated as ‘supreme ultimate’ or ‘great polarity’ and is expressed in the symbol of yin and yang. A universal force composed of the powers of yin and yang is central to Taoist philosophy. ‘Chuan’ means fist or boxing, Tai chi Chuan means supreme ultimate boxing or grand ultimate fist, the highest attainable martial art using the principles of yin and yang.

Chen Tai Chi (Taijiquan) Fight Free Spar. 陳自強 Chen ZiQiang
DenverChenTaiji.com
Chen ZiQiang 陳自強 is 125 pounds. His opponent is 240 pounds.
Using very little destructive spectrum of his skills, and no fist or elbow fajin. (All other Chen ZiQiang sparring videos he used zero destructive power)
CZQ is a pure Taijiquan martial artist, 20th generation Chen Village descendant, the family that originated all Tai Chi systems in the world. His opponent is a skilled fighter in real-world scenarios, a well-rooted internal martial artist, and a Sambo and Greco wrestler. He said he used 100% of force.
He was still preserving the safety of his opponent. All other sparring videos of him you see on YouTube he's using about 10% of his ability due to court/liability aversion.
Chen ZiQiang has a full team of his personally trained young contestants looking to make the move to USA's UFC/MMA tournaments. We are just stuck at US Embassy stage.
Workshops coming to Denver, November 18 to 22 on three topics: meditation, health regeneration, and combat application. According to CZQ, these are the three core elements in the traditional TaiJiQuan spectrum. They are not independent of each other, but merely gradation of demand and difficulty, operating on exact same principles.

How does tai chi work in a fight
To support this channel, visit
You will never see tai chi in a fight. Tai chi is a training method and a philosophic approach to combat. It is not style of fighting. Likewise, if you watch a boxing match, you will never see boxing training methods. You will never see skipping ropes, speed bags, pull ups, push ups, weight lifting, slow sparring, interval training, ladder drills, quick cuts, or any of the many things that boxers do to prepare for a fight.
Comprehensive tai chi training includes movement drills, posture training, meditation, core training, strength training, relaxation drills, breath work, mind/body training, sensitivity training, timing and distance exercises, and many of the training methods that are part of other martial arts. It includes striking, throws, joint control, pressure point manipulation, and much much more.
Spectators cannot hope to understand what is happening in a professional boxing match, because they just can't know what is going on as well as the seasoned fighters do. Likewise, few if any will be able to see the tai chi in a fight.
Most tai chi schools do not teach comprehensive tai chi, and have little interest in doing so. That is fine. The benefits of tai chi go far beyond martial arts and self defence. The average tai chi student doesn't need to master a complete martial art any more than the average piano student needs to master jazz.

Tai Chi Masters
CREATED IN 2000
Inspired by a television talk show interview with a soft spoken, actual Tai Chi master, Deva and I set out to create a humorous parody of the classic Eastern discipline of Tai Chi. Deva actually wrote the script in one night then we later collaborated ideas to make it funny as funny could be. TAI CHI MASTERS was created on a shoestring budget with help from both family and friends. The aim was to showcase our graphic abilities as well as our skills as comedy writers and actors.
Tai Chi Master vs MMA Madman... Chinese Martial Arts FANTASY or REALITY?
Tai Chi Master vs MMA Madman! FANTASY VS REALITY. What inspired this video was a recent fight in which a Tai Chi Master fought Xu Xiaodong an MMA fighter in a test of skills.
41-year-old, the founder of the fledgling Thunder-style of Tai Chi faced off against 38-year-old Beijing-based MMA fighter, coach and promoter known by fans as a madman for his ruthless aggression in the ring. READ THE FULL STORY IN THE BOTTOM OF THE DESCRIPTION.
Prior to the match, which was live-streamed to more than a million viewers, Xu Xiaodong the MMA fighter insulted traditional Chinese martial arts, saying that they were all about style with no substance. He then went on to prove his point by decimating the Tai Chi Master in less than 10 seconds.
Here lies the problem: Blind Faith!!!
People often believe without question or even testing what they practice in will work in a real street fight. Street fights are ugly, in the real world they don’t represent a martial arts action film. So why do people cling to this blind faith?
Blind Faith: The Challenge of Modern Martial Arts
Testing your ability is natural when learning any martial art.
So important is challenge fighting that it is generally accepted that many of the adaptations in modern martial arts have been a result of these style vs style challenge fights.
In Science, validity is the extent in which what you are practising accurately relates to the real world.
Style vs style comparisons are important for testing the validity of any martial art because it allows for an accurate measure of effectiveness.
After all, fighting the same style of martial art is easy because there is a level of predictability.
Applying what you know to a non compliant fighter from a different martial art is harder and perhaps a real test of skills.
However, if you are going to challenge yourself and another person, then this requires some understanding of what the other fighter does and sufficient preparation in a modern context of MMA.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It all started with a personal grudge. Xu Xiaodong, a 38-year-old MMA coach and promoter, was angry with 41-year-old WeiLei - head of the Leistyle of tai chi - after Wei posted Xu's personal contact information online last year. Xu said that created a disturbance in his life.
Wei arrived in Chengdu last week to prepare for the fight, which was scheduled for Saturday. The fight, which took place in front of a crowd at the Yichan Club, was streamed live via Xu's social media account. It was stopped within 20 seconds, after Wei was knocked to the ground.
After the fight, Xu announced on social media that he would take on anymaster who wants to defend the honour of traditional martial arts, and would put up 1.2 million yuan (S$243,000) in prize money. He said he will expose the fake martial arts masters.
Several tai chi practitioners - including Chen Shou from Chenjiagou, Henan province, the birthplace of Chen style tai chi - say they will take Xu up on his challenge.
Modern tai chi emphasises health, but it can also be powerful in practical combat, especially Chen style tai chi, Chen said.
Also reported to have accepted his challenge were two taiji masters Lu Xing and Wang Zhanhai, Li Shangxian, a Chinese boxing expert from the Shaolin Meihua Zhuang school, and world-renowned Shaolin fighter-monk Yi Long.

Tai Chi Is a Fighting Art [2018]
When we say Combat Tai Chi we are actually referring to Tai Chi Chuan. Chuan means Fist. All Tai Chi started out as Combat Tai Chi or Tai Chi Chuan. We tend to say Combat Tai Chi rather than just Tai Chi because although the direct translation is fist in the case of Combat Tai Chi fist refers to the idea of combative use much more than any specific reference to an actual fist.
Over the last 50 years or so some Tai Chi instructors dropped the Martial Tai Chi fighting principles from their art and started calling their art just Tai Chi without the Chuan. The idea was to allow practitioners to learn and work on the health and healing while leaving out the martial aspects of Combat Tai Chi.
The problem is that the Combat Tai Chi moves/forms have specific internal and external applications that are also the correct uses for health and healing with Tai Chi. Without these applications the art truly is not Combat Tai Chi and it is not able to impart the amazing internally healthy Tai Chi benefits either because the mechanical and energetic principles are not understood and so are not being worked in the movements.
Combat Tai Chi involves all aspects of self defense with Tai Chi. Combat Tai Chi also includes the healing aspects. However, when we say Combat Tai Chi on our videos and materials we tend to just put the Martial aspects of the Tai Chi on that DVD or video. So, the student who wants Combat Tai Chi can specifically obtain and work on that.
If the student wants the health aspects of Tai Chi then they can study that aspect by itself also. However, in our regular curriculum you will find the health and healing is mixed right in with the self defense and it is very easy to see that Combat Tai Chi and Tai Chi are one and the same.
Although Combat Tai Chi and Tai Chi for health can be studied separately, they must be studied together at least to some degree in order for the student to really understand the material.
