Echinacea, the purple coneflower, is the best known and researched herb for stimulating the immune system. Thousands of Europeans and Americans use echinacea preparations against colds and flu, minor infections, and a host of other major and minor ailments. This native American herb has an impressive record of laboratory and clinical research. Thousands of doctors currently use echinacea for treating infectious diseases.
Echinacea has a rich tradition of use by North American Plains Indians who used it medicinally more than any other plant. It was prominent in modern American medicine in the early 20th Century, and was discovered by Europeans, who have used it extensively since the 1930s. Today millions of Europeans use echinacea as their primary therapy for colds, flus, infections, and for general immune-boosting effects.
Health Benefits of Echinacea
Echinacea increases the "non-specific" activity of the immune system. In other words, unlike a vaccine which is active only against a specific disease, echinacea stimulates the overall activity of the cells responsible for fighting all kinds of infection. Unlike antibiotics, which are directly lethal to bacteria, echinacea makes our own immune cells more efficient in attacking bacteria, viruses and abnormal cells, including cancer cells. Echinacea facilitates wound healing, lessens symptoms of and speeds recovery from viruses. Anti-inflammatory effects make it useful externally against inflammatory skin conditions including psoriasis and eczema. It may also increase resistance to candida, bronchitis, herpes, and other infectious conditions.
• Colds, coughs and flu and other upper respiratory conditions
• Enlarged lymph glands, sore throat
• Urinary tract infections
• Other minor infections
• May help combat herpes and candida
• Wounds, skin regeneration and skin infections (external use)
• Psoriasis, eczema and inflammatory skin conditions (external use)

Echinacea Does So Much More Than Help with Colds! Powerful Health Benefits of Echinacea -Potent Herb
Most people associate the benefits of the flowery herb echinacea with boosting the immune system. As a result, most people simply relate echinacea with cold viruses and leave it at that. This is unfortunate because it means that people are walking past the powerful extent that echinacea reaches, as it is one of the most potent herbs of the world. Echinacea does so much more than help with colds!
Echinacea is an herb which is native to eastern and central North America and was used by Native Americans to help cure many ailments. Archaeologists have found evidence that Native Americans may have used echinacea for more than 400 years to treat infections and wounds, and as a general cure-all. Today, Echinacea is used as a traditional herbal treatment for relieving ailments from immune system problems to inflammation. Both the roots and the above-ground parts of the plant have been found to contain substances that stimulate our immune system.
Studies have demonstrated that echinacea tea has powerful natural anti-inflammatory properties. The active chemical components in echinacea have been proven to reduce inflammation and the associated pain of that irritation. For this reason, echinacea is often recommended as a “cure-all” for aches and pains in the joints. Echinacea is frequently taken together with goldenseal to help fight off inflammation.
The anti-inflammatory capacity of echinacea extends to the respiratory tracts, so for those patients who regularly suffer from conditions like bronchitis, echinacea can help to reduce the irritation and mucus deposition in those tracts, thereby helping you to heal faster. Some studies have shown that echinacea combined with thuja can be effective for treating upper respiratory infections.
Echinacea boosts your immune system by activating T-cell renewal and helping with the production of antibodies and interferon, known for blocking viral infections. Studies have shown that regular intake of echinacea can reduce your chances of catching a cold by 50% and if you are already ill, taking echinacea can help reduce the duration of your cold by 1.4 days.
Echinacea is currently being recognized in health magazines for its effects on anxiousness. Scientists report that Echinacea (angustifolia) root contains substances that bind to specific brain receptors that signal our bodies to reduce anxiousness and restore calm. At high levels (hundreds of milligrams), echinacea acts as an immune stimulant.
Several studies have confirmed echinacea's benefits in regards to the common cold, including the fact that those treated with it saw their symptoms alleviated more rapidly. Other studies suggested that echinacea enhances systemic immune response during a common cold.
Echinacea also increases the production of white blood cells in the body, which are the main soldiers in the battle against illness going on in our bodies every day. It also contains a compound, which actually inhibits bacteria and viruses from penetrating healthy cells, thereby greatly reducing the chances of contracting any type of infection while consuming echinacea in either supplemental or natural form.
Echinacea has been connected to preventing cancer because it stimulates the body’s immune system to eliminate cancerous cells. Although echinacea is not necessarily considered an antioxidant, it can certainly help eliminate free radicals by stimulating the proper immune system cells, like T cells, thereby helping to prevent the development of cancer.
Echinacea has powerful effects against a range of infections from gum disease to ear infections. When applied topically studies show that it is effective against recurring vaginal yeast infections while it is often prescribed for infections of the urinary tract.
Researchers found that the echinacea combined with sage combination was effective at treating acute sore throats. Research has also suggested that echinacea may aid in the recovery from strep throat by virtue of its anti-viral and anti-bacterial qualities.
Echinacea has been recommended to patients for many years as a way to help heal psoriasis and eczema. It also speeds up the recovery time and wound healing process plus prevents any open sores from becoming infected.
Drinking a few cups of Echinacea tea on a daily will help keep your immune system strong and ready to ward off any ailments.

Echinacea tea is growing in popularity among health conscious individuals, and for good reason. Not only does it have a distinct taste, but it can promote our overall health a number of different ways. It has become well known for its excellent immune boosting effects and anti-inflammatory compounds. Echinacea tea has long been used for its medicinal benefits and therapeutic benefits as well. Now, lets discuss some of the incredible health benefits of consuming echinacea tea regularly.
1. First, one of echinacea tea’s greatest and most well known health benefits is is ability to boost the immune system and reduce the risk of developing certain diseases, such as the common cold and flu. Studies have found that it can not only help to reduce the risk of catching cold and flu by more than 50%, but it can also help to reduce the duration of common cold and flu symptoms. Echinacea tea is well known as a very effective natural cold and flu remedy. The many potent antioxidant compounds in this tea are also helpful in this regard.
2. Echinacea tea can also help to reduce inflammation throughout the entire body, even chronic inflammation. Studies have shown that regular consumption of this tea can help to not only reduce inflammation, but also reverse inflammation in the body due to its bioactive compounds. This makes echinacea tea helpful for those individuals who suffer from arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and joint pain. As well, since inflammation can be one of the causes of various diseases, it can help to improve our overall health as well, especially as we get older.
3. Consuming echinacea tea regularly can also help to improve heart health and reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Some studies have shown that it can help to regulate and improve blood pressure levels. This is often attributed to its good levels of nutrition, as well as its many potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Its antioxidant compounds can be especially helpful in this regard due to their ability to reduce free radicals and oxidative stress that can damage and compromise the cardiovascular system.
4. Surprising to some, but regular consumption of echinacea tea can help to manage and improve anxiety. This is again due to the medicinal and healing properties of the tea. When consumed regularly, it can help to improve feelings of calmness and relaxation, which can then decrease anxiety overall. Consuming this tea before bedtime can also help with sleep due to its relaxation benefits, which can promote a good nights rest and feeling better refreshed when waking up.
5. Lastly, consuming echinacea tea regularly can help to improve the overall health and look of the skin. This is often attributed to its high amounts of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory abilities. these antioxidants can help to reduce skin damaging free radicals that can lead to signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles. Also, echinacea tea can help to reduce skin ailments, such as eczema, psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions. It can also help to regenerate the skin and improve the skin’s overall health and look.

Medicinal Herbs (n) – plants with culinary or medicinal use; this may refer to any part of the plant – including bark, root, flower, and seeds.
Humans have used medicinal plants for over 70,000 years to help preserve food, enhance flavor, and provide other health benefits.
There are literally thousands of medicinal herbs and plants. In today’s video, we’ll cover some particularly popular (and very beneficial) medicinal herbs for improving your health. All of the medicinal plants we'll cover today have strong research backing.
Hippocrates once said, “Let food be thy medicine.” We believe his words are true. Today’s video will help you take action on that sage advice.
Broadly speaking, there are two main groups of medicinal plants and herbs – 1) culinary herbs (those that we commonly use for cooking) and 2) medicinal herbs (those that we don’t cook with often yet are very beneficial for our health).
Many culinary herbs are very medicinal (example: ginger, basil, rosemary)
Here are some very popular culinary herbs that are also medicinal:
-Basil: powerful antioxidants
-Rosemary: great for memory
-Thyme: boosts immune system
-Oregano: strong antimicrobial
Culinary medicinal herbs are typically safe in large doses – hence why humans have learned to incorporate them into our food.
Many medicinal herbs are very powerful and should be used with caution. Two examples of powerful medicinal plants are St. John’s Wort (a powerful anti-depressant with lots of different interactions with drugs) and Kava (a powerful anti-anxiety and pain-relieving herb that’s toxic in high doses).
Our goal is to cover 10 medicinal herbs for beginners that have great safety profiles and are also very beneficial.
** Medicinal Herb #1: Ginger **
Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory. It also helps relieve symptoms of nausea.
** Medicinal Herb #2: Lavender **
Lavender is a great relaxing herb that is best taken as an essential oil at night. Research shows that Lavender improves sleep and mood.
** Medicinal Herb #3: Garlic **
Garlic is one of nature’s best heart health herbs. Garlic lowers triglycerides and cholesterol.
** Medicinal Herb #4: Tea Tree **
Tea Tree (best used as a topical essential oil) is one of nature’s best anti-microbial herbs. Research shows that Tea Tree can kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria like methicillin-resistant staph (MRSA).
** Medicinal Herb #5: Peppermint **
Peppermint is a great herb to improve digestive health.
** Medicinal Herb #6: Cayenne **
Cayenne is a powerful herb for decreasing pain, slightly increasing your metabolic rate, and improving your circulation.
** Medicinal Herb #7: Echinacea **
Echinacea is a powerful herb for stimulating your immune system and preventing you from getting sick.
** Medicinal Herb #8: Dandelion **
Dandelion is a powerful herb for improving liver health (bile flow and supporting the liver’s natural detoxification functions).
** Medicinal Herb #9: Chamomile **
Like Lavender, Chamomile is a great relaxing herb for decreasing stress and promoting restful sleep. It’s best taken at night as a tea.
** Medicinal Herb #10: Turmeric/Curcumin **
I can’t really say enough good things about Turmeric. It’s perhaps the most versatile and powerful medicinal herb and plant on this entire list. Research supports Turmeric’s use as a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, heart health & brain health promoter.
Unfortunately, Turmeric is poorly absorbed when eaten as a spice (only about 10% of what you eat is actually absorbed), so we do recommend you supplement with a bio-available Turmeric daily.
** Bonus Medicinal Herb #11: Stinging Nettle **
Stinging Nettle is very useful in preventing allergies (it reduces histamine release). Using the seeds of the Stinging Nettle plant also helps improve free Testosterone levels in men.
Take-Home Message: Medicinal herbs and plants are powerful, and we definitely recommend you get as many herbs and spices from your foods as possible.

Greta will also cover when to use fresh or dried herbs, why it’s important to measure, how and why we must always label, determining dosage, as well as the responsibilities of being a medicine maker. In part 4, Greta continues making tinctures with echinacea angustifolia as she strains the dried root with a tighter weave fabric to keep particulate matter from entering the strained tincture.
