When you have joint pain or arthritis, your body is in an inflammatory state. What you eat can increase your inflammation and it can also lead you to other chronic diseases such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Here are 10 foods you may be eating that can worsen joint pain or arthritis.
Avoid 10 Foods That Can Worsen Joint Pain or Arthritis
1. Avoid Red and Processed Meat: A research study of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown a link between red meat and inflammation markers. So, substitute the red processed meat with fruits and vegetables. Both red and processed meats have chemical purine and nitrite that can make joint pain or arthritis worse.
2. Avoid Sugar: Clinical experts warn that processed sugars often trigger the release of cytokines, which are inflammatory messengers. Sugar can worsen your joint pain or arthritis. Sugar is known by many names, e.g. fructose or sucrose etc. Avoid the foods with these on ingredient labels.
3. Saturated Fats Can Worsen Joint Pain: Saturated fats trigger adipose inflammation, which worsens arthritis or joint inflammation. Pizza and cheese are the largest sources of saturated fats in an average American diet.
4. Trans Fats: Trans fats can trigger systemic inflammation, which can be found in fast foods and other fried products, frozen breakfast products, cookies, and crackers. Arthritis patients should avoid foods with partially hydrogenated oils in the ingredient labels.
5. Omega 6 Fatty Acids Can Worsen Arthritis: The human body needs a healthy balance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. High consumption of omega-6s can worsen the joint pain. These fatty acids are found in oils such as corn, safflower, sunflower, soy, peanut, and vegetables.
6. Refined Carbohydrates: White flour products, white rice, white potatoes and many cereals are refined carbohydrates. These refined carbohydrate foods fuel the production of advanced glycation end products that worsen arthritis or stimulate inflammation.
7. Avoid Mono-sodium glutamate to Avoid Joint Pain: Mono-sodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor-enhancing food additive most commonly used in fast foods, prepared soups and soup mixes, salad dressings and deli meats. This chemical can trigger joint inflammation or arthritis.
8. Avoid Gluten: If you are sensitive to gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye, or casein, dairy products, should avoid them when you have joint pains or arthritis.
9. Avoid Aspartame to avoid arthritis: Aspartame is a non-nutritive and intense artificial sweetener used in large number of products worldwide. Although it is approved by the FDA, your immune system may react to the “foreign substance” by resisting the chemical, which in return will worsen the joint pain.
10. Alcohol: Alcohol use weakens liver function and disrupts other multi-organ interactions and can cause inflammation and joint pain. It is best removed or used in moderation.
What Home Remedies Help Reduce Arthritis Pain?
There are a number of home remedies for arthritis pain that offer options to arthritis sufferers who want to avoid traditional anti-inflammatory medications and painkillers. Natural approaches like the following are becoming more popular. Nonetheless, always consult your doctor before trying natural or home remedies.
Focus on losing weight
Shedding pounds can make a big difference in the amount of pain you endure from arthritis. The more you weigh, the more pressure there is on arthritic joints, particularly your knees, hips, and feet. Weight loss also improves your mobility, decreases pain, and prevents future damage to your joints.
Get more exercise
Besides helping you lose weight, exercise improves flexibility in your joints. Be careful about exercises like jogging or long walks, though, because these can damage joints over time. Low-impact exercises such as water aerobics or swimming give you the benefit of flexing your joints without stressing them.
Apply hot and cold therapy
Warm baths or showers and heating pads ease stiffness in your joints. Sleeping under an electric blanket at night will help keep your joints loose. Cold therapies are best for relieving pain and reducing inflammation. Commercial gel ice packs are readily available and inexpensive. But a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel and applied to painful joints is just as good.
Practice meditation
Meditation and relaxation techniques may be able to help you reduce arthritis pain. Research has found that mindful meditation not only lowers stress and anxiety, but may actually lessen physical pain from inflammation and swelling.
Increase consumption of certain foods
Find foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids and add fish oil supplements to your diet. These have been shown to reduce joint stiffness and pain.
Turmeric, the yellow spice common in Indian dishes, has anti-inflammatory properties that appear to help with arthritis pain.
Certain herbal supplements appear to have arthritis-fighting properties, including
* Boswellia
* Bromelain
* Devil’s claw
* Ginkgo
* Stinging nettle
* Thunder god vine
Always consult your doctor before trying supplements because they may cause side effects or dangerous drug interactions.
Be sure to talk to your doctor before trying a new supplements and be sure to buy from a reputable source.
Get a massage
Massages increase flexibility while reducing pain and stiffness. Learn self-massage techniques or schedule appointments with a professional massage therapist regularly.

Arthritis Pain Relief and Supplements: What You Need to Know
Do you suffer from arthritis or know someone who does? For arthritis sufferers, pain becomes a fixture in their life. Over-the-counter medications do provide relief, but it short lived. As soon as the medication wears off, the pain returns. There is hope though. For many, that hope comes in the form of natural and dietary supplements. Just a sample of the supplements that can provide relieve include devil’s claw, ginger, stinging nettle, flax, and ASU.
You now know that some herbal and dietary supplements can provide arthritis relief. Your first thought may be to run to the drug store. Wait! Before you make your purchase, there a number of things you should know about these supplements.
Some herbal, dietary, and natural supplements counteract with over-the-counter and prescribed medications. For that reason, medical advice is strongly advised. Talk to a medical professional. This should be a primary care physician or at least a pharmacist. The goal of supplements is to relieve arthritis pain and discomfort, not create other complications. If you are worried about discouragement, don’t ask if a supplement will work. Instead, ask if it is safe to take with your medications.
Remember there is no cure. You can treat arthritis, but it cannot be cured. For that reason, stay away from any supplements with the claim. You will waste your money. These supplements can reduce the pain, inflammations, sleep difficulties, and decreased mobility associated with arthritis, but that is it. Plenty of products outright state this; do not opt for one that that lies.
These herbal supplements are not worth putting your health at risk. As previously stated, some supplements counteract with over-the-counter and prescribed medication. If you are in severe pain, you may be willing to make the switch. You may stop taking your diabetes medication to take devil’s claw, and so forth. This is not recommended. Never stop taking prescribed medication. Once again, speak to a healthcare professional. Many supplements provide relief and are safe to take. Your doctor can advise you on which supplements are best.
A world of information is available online. Almost fifty herbal, natural, and dietary supplements can aid in arthritis relief. Some treat joint inflammation and swelling, while others treat sleep difficultly, decreased mobility, cartilage damage, and pain. Which is right for you? An online internet search will tell. Read reviews to see what people have to say. Look for both positive and negative reviews. It is rare for a product to receive rave reviews, but be cautious of telltale signs, such as “scam,” “waste of money,” or “too many side effects.”
Speaking of the side effects, know what they are. Then, make an informed decision. Arthritis sufferers should examine the risk to determine if they are worth it. For example, cat’s claw is a supplement used to reduce inflammation. Possible side effects include headaches, vomiting, and dizziness. If your job requires you to be on your feet all day, the dizziness may be too much to handle. Look for an arthritis-helping supplement that has little to no side effects.
You can and should find the best deals. In terms of supplements, the best deal isn’t always the lowest price. Aim for the best quality for the lowest price. This is where the above mentioned research comes in handy. Look for specific brand names with positive feedback. When buying online, compare the size with prize and include the cost of shipping.
You must follow all directions. Herbal supplements are typically safe to use, when taken as directed. Different brands use similar extracts, but those amounts vary. Consult with your primary care physician or the bottle to get an exact dosage. Despite the common belief, more will do no good. In fact, it may cause complications.
Finally, if you take herbal supplements on a daily basis, write down and tape to your refrigerator. Also, inform those close to you. In the event you need medical care and cannot speak for yourself, responding personnel must know all medications you are taking, including supplements.

An anti-inflammatory diet can help with reducing joint pain and arthritis, healing the gut (key if you have celiac, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's or IBS), getting rid of eczema and psoriasis, and keeping other autoimmune conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis in check. It's also beneficial if you suffer from anxiety or depression.

Arthritis Pain Relief and Supplements (What You Need to Know)

Do you suffer from arthritis or know someone who does? For arthritis sufferers, pain becomes a fixture in their life.
Over-the-counter medications do provide relief, but it short lived. As soon as the medication wears off, the pain returns.
There is hope though. For many, that hope comes in the form of natural and dietary supplements. Just a sample of the supplements that can provide relieve include devil’s claw, ginger, stinging nettle, flax, and ASU.
You now know that some herbal and dietary supplements can provide arthritis relief.
Your first thought may be to run to the drug store. Wait! Before you make your purchase, there a number of things you should know about these supplements.
Some herbal, dietary, and natural supplements counteract with over-the-counter and prescribed medications. For that reason, medical advice is strongly advised. Talk to a medical professional.
This should be a primary care physician or at least a pharmacist. The goal of supplements is to relieve arthritis pain and discomfort, not create other complications.
If you are worried about discouragement, don’t ask if a supplement will work. Instead, ask if it is safe to take with your medications.
Remember there is no cure. You can treat arthritis, but it cannot be cured. For that reason, stay away from any supplements with the claim.
You will waste your money. These supplements can reduce the pain, inflammations, sleep difficulties, and decreased mobility associated with arthritis, but that is it.
Plenty of products outright state this; do not opt for one that that lies.
These herbal supplements are not worth putting your health at risk. As previously stated, some supplements counteract with over-the-counter and prescribed medication.
If you are in severe pain, you may be willing to make the switch. You may stop taking your diabetes medication to take devil’s claw, and so forth.
This is not recommended. Never stop taking prescribed medication. Once again, speak to a healthcare professional.
Many supplements provide relief and are safe to take. Your doctor can advise you on which supplements are best.
A world of information is available online. Almost fifty herbal, natural, and dietary supplements can aid in arthritis relief.
Some treat joint inflammation and swelling, while others treat sleep difficultly, decreased mobility, cartilage damage, and pain.
Which is right for you? An online internet search will tell. Read reviews to see what people have to say.
Look for both positive and negative reviews. It is rare for a product to receive rave reviews, but be cautious of telltale signs, such as “scam,” “waste of money,” or “too many side effects.”
Speaking of the side effects, know what they are. Then, make an informed decision. Arthritis sufferers should examine the risk to determine if they are worth it.
For example, cat’s claw is a supplement used to reduce inflammation. Possible side effects include headaches, vomiting, and dizziness. If your job requires you to be on your feet all day, the dizziness may be too much to handle.
Look for an arthritis-helping supplement that has little to no side effects.
You can and should find the best deals. In terms of supplements, the best deal isn’t always the lowest price. Aim for the best quality for the lowest price. This is where the above mentioned research comes in handy. Look for specific brand names with positive feedback. When buying online, compare the size with prize and include the cost of shipping.
You must follow all directions. Herbal supplements are typically safe to use, when taken as directed. Different brands use similar extracts, but those amounts vary. Consult with your primary care physician or the bottle to get an exact dosage. Despite the common belief, more will do no good. In fact, it may cause complications.
Finally, if you take herbal supplements on a daily basis, write down and tape to your refrigerator. Also, inform those close to you. In the event you need medical care and cannot speak for yourself, responding personnel must know all medications you are taking, including supplements.

Arthritis of the Fingers
Diagnosing arthritis of the fingers can be difficult. Arthritis can affect any joint in the body but it is commonly seen in the joints of the fingers. The different types of arthritis and the pattern of joint involvement include osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gouty arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis. Heberden’s nodes are hard or bony swellings that can develop in the distal interphalangeal joints (DIP) and may or may not be painful. Heberden’s nodes are caused by the formation of osteophytes due to repeated trauma at the joint and usually occurs during middle age. Bouchard’s nodes are bony growths that can form on the proximal interphalangeal joints of the finger (PIP). Bouchard’s nodes, like Heberden’s nodes, may or may not be painful. Bouchard’s nodes are typically associated with limited motion of the affected joint. Mucous cysts are small, fluid-filled sacs that form between the DIP joint of the finger and the bottom of the fingernail. The best treatment is surgical excision of the cyst and removal of the underlying osteophyte to decrease the risk of recurrence. It is an anti-inflammatory form of arthritis, and it is sometimes mistaken for osteoarthritis. Dactylitis is also referred to as “sausage digit”. It is inflammation of the entire digit. Sausage fingers is a major finding of psoriatic arthritis. Nail pitting is small depressions in the finger nails, and it is most common in people who have psoriasis. Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that is sometimes called “gouty arthritis”. Gouty arthritis will mimic infection and may develop in people who have high levels of uric acid in the blood. The uric acid can form needle like crystals in the joint and cause pain, tenderness, swelling, and tenosynovitis. Periarticular erosions seen on x-ray may also be present with gout of the finger joints. Periarticular erosions are usually multiple and bilateral with sclerotic borders. In juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, it is ANA positive in 30% of the time. Rheumatoid factor is negative in a child and later on it may become positive, and there is shortened digits. Polyarticular rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis that affects five or more joints; it is polyarticular in about 30%. Pauciarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis that affects less than five joints; it is pauciarticular in about 50%. In pauciarticular onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis, check the iris of the eye for iridocyclitis. In polyarticular rheumatoid arthritis, check cervical spine for subaxial instability. Rheumatoid arthritis of the hand occurs more in females than in males. Rheumatoid arthritis has spontaneous remissions and exacerbations. The disease can have a systemic nature. Rheumatoid arthritis is typically poly-articular, bilateral and symmetrical, and most commonly affects the hands and feet. The patient complains of pain and stiffness of the joints, especially in the morning (morning stiffness). X-rays show periarticular erosions at the time of diagnosis. Osteopenia and minimal osteophyte formation favor the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. Early (acute) rheumatoid arthritis has symptoms of hot, swollen, tender joints (synovitis). Complicated rheumatoid arthritis has symptoms of digital vasculitis, ecchymosis, skin atrophy, and nodules. Advanced rheumatoid arthritis has symptoms of swelling of the MCP joint, lateral slippage of extensor tendons and tendon ruptures, ulnar deviation of fingers, and x-ray shows destruction of the MCP joints with subluxation, ulnar deviation, and wrist destruction. Finger deformities include mallet finger, boutonniere, and swan neck. The thumb is also involved. These changes occur due to proliferation, inflammation and hypertrophy of the synovium. Involvement of the distal radioulnar joint is usually associated with rupture of the extensor digiti minimi.

Hand Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo
Hand arthritis is pretty common, and it can be very debilitating. Since the joints in the hand are small, you don’t have to do much to relieve the pain, you just have to keep them moving. These stretches and exercises should help your hand arthritis feel better. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at:
You can set your arm on a table or flat surface to relax it, or if you don’t have anything available, you can prop your elbow up on your knee or thigh.
Start off with a fist and warm up your wrist. With your palm side facing down, move your fist up and down at the wrist for flexion and extension. Now move it side to side in a radial and ulnar deviation movement. Ten in each direction should be fine since this is just to warm up the muscles.
Next, you will keep your fingers straight, and take your thumb and touch each finger in the middle of your hand, and then spread them all back apart. You can do three times back and forth.
Now bend your fingers at the joint closest to your wrist, still keeping the fingers as straight as you can. Bend down and back up gliding the tendons up and down. Now move to the next joint down the fingers. This time open your fingers, and then curl the top part of your fingers down for the stretch. Finally, go to the last joint farthest down the finger. You might have to hold onto the near part of your finger so just the last joint moves. Just start off with ten of each of these with a continuous movement.
For the last stretch, start with all your fingers close together, and then spread them out as far as you can, just like you are fanning them out. You don’t have to do a lot of these exercises since these are small joints. 2-3 minutes, 2-3 times a day should be plenty.
