The Waverly Hills Sanatorium is a closed sanatorium located in southwestern Louisville/Jefferson County, Kentucky. It opened in 1910 as a two-story hospital to accommodate 40 to 50 tuberculosis patients. In the early 1900s, Jefferson County was ravaged by an outbreak of tuberculosis (the White Plague) which prompted the construction of a new hospital. The hospital closed in 1961, due to the antibiotic drug streptomycin that lowered the need for such a hospital.
Waverly Hills has been popularized on the television show Ghost Hunters as being one of the most haunted hospitals in the eastern United States. The sanatorium was featured on ABC/FOX Family Channel's Scariest Places On Earth, VH1's Celebrity Paranormal Project, Syfy's Ghost Hunters, Zone Reality's Creepy, the British show Most Haunted, Paranormal Challenge and Ghost Adventures on Travel Channel. Also popularizing Waverly Hills was the film Spooked: The Ghosts of Waverly Hills Sanatorium, released in 2006, which purports to document paranormal sightings at the site
Plans have been developed to convert the sanatorium into a hotel and conference center.
The land that is today known as Waverly Hill was purchased by Major Thomas H. Hays in 1883 as the Hays' family home. Since the new home was far away from any existing schools, Mr. Hays decided to open a local school for his daughters to attend. He started a one-room schoolhouse on Pages Lane and hired Lizzie Lee Harris as the teacher. Due to Miss Harris' fondness for Walter Scott's Waverley novels, she named the schoolhouse Waverly School. Major Hays liked the peaceful-sounding name, so he named his property Waverley Hill. The Board of Tuberculosis Hospital kept the name when they bought the land and opened the sanatorium. It is not known exactly when the spelling changed to exclude the second e and became Waverly Hills. However the spelling fluctuated between both spellings many times over the years.
One of the legends told of Waverly Hills involves a man in a white coat who has been seen walking in the kitchen and the smell of cooking food that sometimes wafts through the room. During their initial visit, they found the kitchen was a disaster, a ruin of broken windows, fallen plaster, broken tables and chairs and puddles of water and debris that resulted from a leaking roof. The cafeteria had not fared much better. It was also in ruins and the team quickly retreated. Before they could do so though, several of them reported the sounds of footsteps, a door swinging shut and the smell of fresh baked bread in the air. A quick search revealed that no one else was in the building and there was certainly no one cooking anything in the kitchen. They could come up with no logical explanation for what had occurred.
Ghost researchers are always drawn to the fifth floor of the former hospital. The fifth floor consisted of two nurses’ stations, a pantry, a linen room, medicine room and two medium-sized rooms on both sides of the two nurses’ stations. One of these, Room 502, is the subject of many rumors and legends and just about every curiosity-seeker that had broken into Waverly Hills over the years wanted to see it. This is where, according to the stories, people have jumped to their deaths, have seen shapes moving in the windows and have heard disembodied voices that order trespassers to “get out”.
There is a lot of speculation as to what went on in this part of the hospital but what is believed is that mentally insane tuberculosis patients were housed on the fifth floor. This kept them far away from the rest of the patients in the hospital but still in an area where they could benefit from the fresh air and sunshine. This floor is actually centered in the middle of the hospital and the two wards, extending out from the nurses’ station, is glassed in on all sides and opens out onto a patio-type roof. The patients were isolated on either side of the nurses’ stations and they had to go to a half door at each station to get their food and medicine and to use the restroom, which was located adjacent to the station.

Inside 'world's most dangerous' hospital in Guatemala

***This report contains some disturbing images*** An undercover BBC investigation into conditions at a mental health institution in Guatemala has revealed patient suffering and abuse at the hands of those meant to care for them. Federico Mora Hospital has been described by campaigners as the world's most abusive and dangerous mental health institution. In 2012, Guatemala was ordered by an American Human Rights Commission to make emergency improvements to the Federico Mora Hospital to save lives. The government promised to comply. But an undercover BBC investigation found little has changed. The government defends conditions in the hospital, says it has begun improving mental health care in the country and has ordered an investigation into sexual abuse claims. Report by Chris Rogers

The History of benenden health and the fight against TB
Meet Mervyn Quinlan, Curator of the Mervyn Quinlan museum at Benenden Hospital in Kent, as he describes the history of benenden health in a short film produced April 2010.
Find out how benenden health's history in the fight against Tuberculosis (TB) began in 1905 when a Post Office telegrapher, Charles Garland, promoted a mutual membership model as an easily affordable way for ordinary Post Office workers to get effective treatment in the event of contracting TB. This mutual model formed the framework for the modern organisation that is benenden health today.
The video describes why TB was so prevalent in this particular working environment, how Charles Garland sought to address this and what treatment involved -- in an age before modern drugs almost eradicated TB in the UK.
Information contained within this video (e.g. job titles and trading styles) correct at time of production.

Reminiscences of TB Sanitorium and Preventorium (1926, narration added 1988)
This program is the narrated version of the 1926 film, T.B. Sanitorium and Preventorium. The narrator, Walter L. Zeigler, was a patient at the South Mountain Restoration Center in South Mountain, Pennsylvania, as a child in 1939 through 1940 and later worked there as an adult. He provides insight and stories of therapies, patients, and the nurses who worked there. His narration covers the entire film that shows, not only tuberculosis patients, but shows healthy children being institutionalized to prevent them from contracting tuberculosis or other diseases. The film opens with aerial shots in 1926 of the South Mountain Restoration Center including the tuberculosis hospital, children's hospital, patient huts, open air pavilions for patient sun bathing, staff golf course, and patient burial ground. It also shows close up exterior shots of huts, hospital, chapel, patient store (interior as well), nurses home, and the burning of the auditorium. The film documents therapies such as adult tuberculosis patients sun bathing in skimpy clothing on the floor of a deck with hospital attendants monitoring their behavior. Another therapy shown includes patients sitting with their mouths open, holding small mirrors to reflect the sunlight into their mouths. Well but undernourished children (called Fresh Air Kids) who come to the Center for the summer to gain better health are shown arriving at the center in buses, getting a physical exam and having their hair shaved, playing on playground equipment designed to optimize exercise, sunbathing with a single, long cloth covering the faces of tens of children, picnicking, hiking in formation, waiting in line to get a drink of milk, participating in formal flag lowering ceremonies, boxing (both male and female children), and leaving in buses and trains. Children who were hospitalized due to under-nourishment or other diseases like pneumonia are shown sleigh riding, throwing snow balls, having their hands inspected in their dormitory, at recreation time with doll making and board games, swinging, and playing jacks. Nurses are shown in formation walking down the steps of their home, playing on swings, and with patients taking their temperatures, inspecting hands, etc. Narration was taped December 19, 1988. African Americans are shown in this film.

Opened in 1908. First state institution in North Carolina for treating tuberculosis. Sponsored by Dr. J. E.
Brooks of Greensboro.
In 1908, the North Carolina State Sanatorium became the first state institution for the treatment of
tuberculosis patients. Several private institutions, or resorts, were operating in western North Carolina before
that time but treatment was limited to those who could afford it. Dr. J. E. Brooks refused to accept that North
Carolina citizens infected with the lung disease had no other option than to stay home and wait to die. As a
state legislator in 1907, Brooks secured an appropriation of $15,000 to purchase land and build a sanatorium,
and an additional $5,000 for maintenance.
The site chosen for the sanatorium is in present-day Hoke County between Aberdeen and Raeford. The
fear of spreading the infection led to its construction some distance from the nearest town. The mild winters
and summer breezes of the Sandhills region made it the ideal location for patients who often slept on enclosed
porches ventilated by air “tempered and filtered by the sand and filtered and perfumed by the pines.” The
sanatorium opened on April 4, 1908, with capacity for thirty-two patients. A division for African Americans
was established in 1923, a division for prisoners in 1925, and a division for children in 1927. Eventually the
sanatorium housed 650 beds. All North Carolina citizens unable to go to a private specialist could attend the
sanatorium’s diagnostic clinic. However, the waiting list for a bed often was long and it could take nine or ten
months for someone to be admitted. Treatment lasted six months to two years and consisted of strict regimens
of rest, medication, and in some cases surgery.
The North Carolina State Sanatorium was the parent of the state sanatorium system, which grew to
include Western North Carolina Sanatorium near Black Mountain in 1937, the Eastern North Carolina
Sanatorium in Wilson in 1942, and Gravely Sanatorium in Chapel Hill in 1953. The town where the first state
sanatorium was located bore the name Sanitorium until 1948. At that time, it was renamed McCain in honor
of Dr. Paul P. McCain who had served as superintendent and medical director from 1924 to 1946. In 1973, the
State Sanatorium became McCain Hospital. With the increasingly low incidence of tuberculosis, the hospital
was transferred to the Division of Prisons in October 1983. Today it serves as a minimum custody health care
center for male inmates.

Charlie Chaplin: The Cure (1917)
The Cure is a 1917 short comedy film written and directed by Charlie Chaplin.
Chaplin plays a drunkard who checks into a health spa to dry out, but brings along a big suitcase full of alcohol. Along the way he aggravates a large man suffering from gout, evades him and encounters a beautiful young woman who encourages him to stop drinking. However, when the hotel owner learns his employees are getting drunk off Charlie's liquor, he calls an employee and orders him to have the liquor thrown out the window.
The drunk employee hurls the bottles through the window, straight into the spa's health waters. The well becomes spurious with alcohol, sending the spa's inhabitants into a dancing stupor. Chaplin, encouraged by his new love to get sober, drinks from the spurious spa, gets drunk and offends her. She leaves him in anger and walks away. Charlie walks back to the door unsteadily, when he bumps into the large man, tripping him off his wheel chair and landing him into the alcoholic well.
The next morning there are plenty of hangovers, but Chaplin turns sober, walks out and finds the lady. Realizing what had happened, she forgives him. They walk ahead, just then he accidentally steps into the liquor-laden well.

Working at the TB Sanatorium in Leogane, Haiti
Students from fsil.org are doing clinicals (stage) at the Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Legoane, Haiti. Clients will stay in this facility for 2 months of treatment then return home. After returning home, they return daily for medication. This clinical experience greatly impacts the students in that it allows them to better understand how to help with serious chronic illness. They also learn alot about community and public health as they review the impact of having to be in the hospital for 8-12 weeks as well as mitigating the spread of disease. Because so many patients with HIV/AIDS have active tuberculosis, the hospital also has an HIV/AIDS clinic. The students do an excellent job with these clients as well as they provide compassionate evidence-based care. For more information on the FSIL nursing school visit haitinursing.org
