Ask the average American to define herbs and he or she will tell you that herbs are green leaves that have some medicinal properties. Some may even add that herbs like Thyme and Sage are used for cooking. This is how most people define herbs; which is quite good knowledge considering that most folks are ambivalent about the actual use of herbs in their own lives.
A herb (the word rhymes with ‘curb’) is a plant that is grown for medicinal or culinary value.
Typically, the green leafy part of the herb is used, occasionally roots also are put to use. A culinary herb is non-woody and soft. Used for their aromatic flavor and texture, culinary herbs include bay leaf, basil, chervil, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, tarragon and thyme.
The world of medicinal herbs is even more diverse and surprising. Even the most innocuous looking leaf blade may possess a treasure trove of medicinal properties. A medicinal herb is generally a shrub or other woody plant used for therapeutic purposes. Herbalism or Phytotherapy is the practice of folk or traditional medicine that aims to cure “dis-eases” in the body using plants and the active constituents found within them.
This resurgence of interest in herbs was brought about by various systems of holistic healing. Now, more than ever before, people are beginning to realize that good health does not refer to an absence of disease. Rather, it is a balance of physical, mental, emotional and social wellness. Herbal health care is becoming increasingly popular because herbs provide natural stimulants that activate the body’s own defense mechanisms.
When orthodox medicine took over the reins of mainstream health care, herbs and their medicinal values got relegated to the background. One reason could be the problem of availability. Another more important reason is that unlike a pill or a tonic, herbs usually take more time to bring about an effect.
Due to our sedentary lifestyle, processed foods and industrial advances, we have managed to discover a large number of chronic illnesses that were virtually unknown in the past. Medicines used to treat these diseases have side effects. In time, these medicines also become ineffective as the human body develops a resistance to the medicine. After battling it out for many years, practitioners of conventional medicine are finally willing to admit that herbal extracts are an effective source of healing.
Herbal medicines provide a healing system that is in tune with nature. The medicines are characterized by simplicity, depth and effectiveness. They are cost effective too. Absence of side effects also greatly enhances their allure.
Some interesting uses of herbs are:
- Chamomile tea sipped slowly throughout the day helps decrease acidity and soothes the digestive system
- Alfalfa is a highly nutritious herb as it is a natural source of vitamins and minerals.
- Valerian root can be used to treat insomnia.
- Two fresh garlic cloves taken at night increases ones resistance to flu and colds.
- Feverfew is a herb that if taken consistently, effectively reduces the frequency of migraines.
Herbs, like any drug, bring about a physiological change in the body. If taken continuously for prolonged periods, they may affect the body’s natural ability to heal. The aim of herbs is to bring the body back into ‘balance’ so that there is no longer any need for medicine. Herbal medicines may not be the best, pure or only form of medicine. Indeed, it should be used as a complementary medicine that helps doctors achieve the most important goal of all – that of total cure in the easiest, most effective and shortest route.

Herbs are wonderful, you can experience herbs with most of your senses (touch, smell, taste, and sight), they are packed with vitamins and minerals, and have medicinal properties to help your body heal itself.
Ann Prepper discusses herbs that can help you feel better without the worry of hiking off into the woods and hoping you have selected the correct plant. Medicinal Herbs (n) – plants with culinary or medicinal use; this may refer to any part of the plant – including bark, root, flower, and seeds.
Humans have used medicinal plants for over 70,000 years to help preserve food, enhance flavor, and provide other health benefits.
There are literally thousands of medicinal herbs and plants. In today’s video, we’ll cover some particularly popular (and very beneficial) medicinal herbs for improving your health. All of the medicinal plants we'll cover today have strong research backing.
Hippocrates once said, “Let food be thy medicine.” We believe his words are true. Today’s video will help you take action on that sage advice.
Broadly speaking, there are two main groups of medicinal plants and herbs – 1) culinary herbs (those that we commonly use for cooking) and 2) medicinal herbs (those that we don’t cook with often yet are very beneficial for our health).
Many culinary herbs are very medicinal (example: ginger, basil, rosemary)
Here are some very popular culinary herbs that are also medicinal:
-Basil: powerful antioxidants
-Rosemary: great for memory
-Thyme: boosts immune system
-Oregano: strong antimicrobial
Culinary medicinal herbs are typically safe in large doses – hence why humans have learned to incorporate them into our food.
Many medicinal herbs are very powerful and should be used with caution. Two examples of powerful medicinal plants are St. John’s Wort (a powerful anti-depressant with lots of different interactions with drugs) and Kava (a powerful anti-anxiety and pain-relieving herb that’s toxic in high doses).
Our goal is to cover 10 medicinal herbs for beginners that have great safety profiles and are also very beneficial.
** Medicinal Herb #1: Ginger **
Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory. It also helps relieve symptoms of nausea.
** Medicinal Herb #2: Lavender **
Lavender is a great relaxing herb that is best taken as an essential oil at night. Research shows that Lavender improves sleep and mood.
** Medicinal Herb #3: Garlic **
Garlic is one of nature’s best heart health herbs. Garlic lowers triglycerides and cholesterol.
** Medicinal Herb #4: Tea Tree **
Tea Tree (best used as a topical essential oil) is one of nature’s best anti-microbial herbs. Research shows that Tea Tree can kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria like methicillin-resistant staph (MRSA).
** Medicinal Herb #5: Peppermint **
Peppermint is a great herb to improve digestive health.
** Medicinal Herb #6: Cayenne **
Cayenne is a powerful herb for decreasing pain, slightly increasing your metabolic rate, and improving your circulation.
** Medicinal Herb #7: Echinacea **
Echinacea is a powerful herb for stimulating your immune system and preventing you from getting sick.
** Medicinal Herb #8: Dandelion **
Dandelion is a powerful herb for improving liver health (bile flow and supporting the liver’s natural detoxification functions).
** Medicinal Herb #9: Chamomile **
Like Lavender, Chamomile is a great relaxing herb for decreasing stress and promoting restful sleep. It’s best taken at night as a tea.
** Medicinal Herb #10: Turmeric/Curcumin **
I can’t really say enough good things about Turmeric. It’s perhaps the most versatile and powerful medicinal herb and plant on this entire list. Research supports Turmeric’s use as a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, heart health & brain health promoter.
Unfortunately, Turmeric is poorly absorbed when eaten as a spice (only about 10% of what you eat is actually absorbed), so we do recommend you supplement with a bio-available Turmeric daily.
** Bonus Medicinal Herb #11: Stinging Nettle **
Stinging Nettle is very useful in preventing allergies (it reduces histamine release). Using the seeds of the Stinging Nettle plant also helps improve free Testosterone levels in men.
Take-Home Message: Medicinal herbs and plants are powerful, and we definitely recommend you get as many herbs and spices from your foods as possible.

8 Vegetables and Herbs You Can Re grow Again and Again Inside your House or Garden
here are 8 such Vegetables and Herbs You Can Regrow Again and Again in your garden. Do you throw your garlic-bulbs out once they start to sprout? What about your potatoes when they get a little wrinkly? How about ginger-root that sits out on the counter too long?
Well, you could be getting a lot more value out of your produce than you may realize! Many popular edibles can be regrown from the scraps you're likely throwing-out. Keep watching for a list of veggie scraps you will want to hang on to, from here on out.
1.Basil
Basil is a breeze to propagate. Simply take some healthy, fresh, 4-inch cuttings from a young basil plant. Leave just two sets of leaves at the top of each cutting, and remove the remaining leaves.
Then, submerge the cuttings in a few inches of clean-water.
It may take between 1-2 weeks for roots to form after which
Plant it in a small-pot for the windowsill, or out in your garden.
2.Mint
Another herb worth growing from cuttings is mint. Much like basil, you'll want cuttings about 4 to 5 inches in length. Remove lower leaves and place the cuttings in clean-water. Once roots develop, Transfer to a container filled with potting-soil.
3.Green Onions and Scallions
Do you love to toss some green-onions on just about everything? Buy them once, and then grow them from the scraps on a windowsill. Place the root leftover from the green-onions in a couple of inches of water.
And in just a few days you'll notice roots form but also the leaves will start to grow. Continue to harvest while in water, or plant in a container of potting-soil.
4.Ginger Root
Have you ever bought ginger-root and noticed little buds forming? Plant it! You'll have fresh ginger to harvest soon enough! Soak the roots overnight to encourage growth, and then you can transfer it to a container filled with potting-soil. Ginger doesn't like standing-water, so make sure your container has drainage-holes.
5.Garlic
If your garlic-cloves start to sprout, plant them! Garlic is one of the easiest plants to grow over and over again. One clove planted in the garden, in either early-fall or late winter depending on your area, can multiply into a bulb of multiple-cloves.
6.Celery
Celery follows the same protocol as many others. Once you use the celery-stalks, save the end that's leftover. Place it root side down in clean water for around a week, then transfer the celery to rich, well-draining soil and watch it really start to take-off.
7.Lettuce
Buy a fresh head of lettuce, make a salad, and plop the base of the leaves you're left with in a couple of inches of water. Within a week it will begin to regrow!
And 8. Sweet-Potatoes
If you love sweet-potatoes, consider growing them yourself!
submerging more than half of a sweet-potato in a glass of water and sitting it on a sunny windowsill. Wait for sprouts to form and reach 4-inches or so
Once roots form and grow a little, plant out in the garden.

How to grow Ashitaba ANGELICA KEISKEI The Miracle Herb
I received a few seeds from a viewer labeled ASHITABA. That was it. No other info. So I set out trying to find more information.
Apparently this herb is native to China and can grow up to 6 feet high.
The one thing that intrigued me most about it, was the fact that it contained vitamin B12, which is rare for any plant to have.
Ashitaba This herb, also known as tomorrow's leaf , is hardy to 20 degrees F and is usually grown in zones 7-9.
The name tomorrow's leaf comes from the fact that you can pick a leaf today, and get a new one the next.
I really excited to grow this plant. Hopefully, I will grow it to full maturity and be able to save the seeds to share with my viewers.
(From Horizon Herbs Website):
The herb is considered effective in treating eczema and psoriasis, also disorders of the gastrointestinal system, hepatitis, cancer, anemia, chronic fatigue, etc. In-vivo tests of chalcones have shown strong antibiotic activity against staphylococcus.
