Is Green tea for weight loss or are the benefits of green tea just being blown out of proportion? Green tea benefits number in the hundreds starting with claims that it is the healthiest beverage on the planet. However, does green tea and weight loss really relate?
One of the health benefits of green tea is that it's loaded with antioxidants and various substances that are beneficial for your health. Preferably you want to have 2-4 cups of green tea per day for maximum results. The best times to drink it are before and after breakfast and before a workout.
Many studies have shown that green tea can increase fat burning and help you lose weight. What about other teas? What makes green tea so special?
One thing that green tea has that helps people lose weight is
caffeine. Even though A cup of green tea contains much less caffeine (24-40 mg) than a cup of coffee (100-200 mg), its still enough to have a mild effect. Caffeine is a stimulant that will get your heart rate higher and in turn will increase your metabolism.
However this ins't the only way that green tea stands out, and helps
you lose weight. In fact it's been proven that people still lose more
weight with decaffeinated green tea when compared to people that don't drink it at all.
Most people know that green tea is loaded with anti oxidants, but the specifics of these antioxidants reveal what makes this drink so special. Green tea has potent antioxidants known as catechins. Unlike other stimulants like ephedra, these catechins do not stimulate your nervous system. So unlike many stimulants sold in vitamin stores, you won't have a seizure or bleed every time you blow your nose.
Catechins truly have amazing effects even when isolated from the rest of the antioxidants in green tea. They have been linked to lowering blood sugar and insulin levels, lowering blood pressure, lowering LDL's (bad cholestorol), and raising HDL's (good cholesterol).
The most important of these catechins is EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate), a substance that can boost metabolism. EGCG has been linked to fighting cancer and cancer prevention.
In order to burn fat, fat must first be broken down in the fat cell and
moved into the bloodstream. The main antioxidant in tea, EGCG, can help inhibit an enzyme that breaks down the hormone norepinephrine. This means that there will be more norepinephrine released.
Norepinephrine is used by the nervous system as a signal to the fat
cells, telling them to break down fat.
Green tea can help us burn extra fat from exercise. However it has
also been found that it can make us burn more calories even at rest. In most studies, this amounts to about a 3-4% increase, although some studies show an increase as high as 8%! Also the great thing is that a lot of this fat is the harmful inner visceral belly fat.
Several claims have been made that green tea can potentially have an effect on lowering appetite. However, results with appetite have mixed and there are virtually no studies that back this because of
the mixed results. There are also studies performed on animals suggesting that green tea can reduce the amount of fat we absorb from foods, but this has not
been confirmed in humans.
Don't get the wrong idea green tea is not a magic pill! Green tea's effect on actual pounds lost are said to be modest. There have been quite a few studies showing green tea as a great fat burner for workouts.
In one particular study, participants burned 17% more fat than those taking a placebo.
As stated in our last video, drinking coffee or green tea 30 min pre-workout is ideal for fat burning potential.
2. Green tea contains EGCG and tons of antioxidants
Where green tea really stands out from other drinks is its high level of antioxidants and catechins.
Specifically, one known as EGCG.
This substances has been shown to improve calories burned during the day and are excellent for one’s overall health.

EGCG has also been shown to increase levels on noepinephrine.

#1. Green tea extract.

Also, green tea extract commonly comes in pill form. So if you don’t like the taste of green tea or are on the go, it makes things easier.

#2. Regular green tea steeped in cup.
To make, bring water to a hot temperature with a microwave or stove and add in a packet of green tea.
Let it sit for 1-3 minutes, stir and enjoy.
The positives of this method is it’s easy to drink AND adds to your daily water intake.
The drawbacks are it takes a little longer to make than taking a pill.
#3. By far the best kind of green tea is Matcha green tea.
Why?
Because Matcha tea is made through a special shading process in Japan giving it 3x the amount of EGCG and antioxidants as regular green tea.
It also has a really cool bright green color to it.
The only drawbacks are that it is a little more expensive and time consuming to make.
Since it does not come in a packet, you have to whisk the tea yourself, but with the right tools it’s not that time consuming.

Caffeine
Caffeine is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor - phosphodiesterase inhibitor prevents the inactivation of the intracellular second messengers cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)
cAMP activates hormone sensitive lipase, promoting lipolysis and increasing FFA’s
EGCG & Norepinephrine
Green tea contains a phytonutrient called EGCG can help inhibit an enzyme that breaks down the hormone norepinephrine
When this enzyme is inhibited, the amount of norepinephrine increases, promoting fat breakdown
Specifically, it inhibits catechol-O-methyltransferase, which is an enzyme that degrades catecholamines (such as dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine) - inhibition of this enzyme prevents the degradation of catecholamines
CCK - Satiation
EGCG increases the hormone CCK (cholecystokinin), which is responsible for creating the feeling of satiation
CCK slows down intestinal motility as it causes food to move more slowly through the intestines - feel full for a longer period of time
Increased Metabolic Rate
Study - American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Investigated whether green tea extract, by virtue of its high content of caffeine and catechin polyphenols, could increase 24-h energy expenditure (EE) and fat oxidation in humans.
Twenty-four-hour EE, the respiratory quotient (RQ), and the urinary excretion of nitrogen and catecholamines were measured in a respiratory chamber in 10 healthy men
On 3 separate occasions, subjects were randomly assigned among 3 treatments: green tea extract (50 mg caffeine and 90 mg epigallocatechin gallate), caffeine (50 mg), and placebo, which they ingested at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Relative to placebo, treatment with the green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in 24-h EE (4%)
Twenty-four-hour urinary norepinephrine excretion was higher during treatment with the green tea extract than with the placebo (40%)
Treatment with caffeine in amounts equivalent to those found in the green tea extract had no effect on EE and RQ nor on urinary nitrogen or catecholamines
L - Theanine: Serotonin & Satiation
L-theanine increases brain levels of serotonin, dopamine, GABA levels - serotonin acts to increase cholecystokinin and leptin, giving you a “full” feeling
This is a weaker link, but theanine increases levels of alpha waves, putting you in a focused state of mind - you’d likely be less inclined to eat during this, although there isn’t a published study looking directly at this
Although there are some studies show that the appetite reducing effects of nicotine are because it increases alpha waves
L-Theanine: Nitric Oxide
Theanine increases blood flow as it increases the production of nitric oxide in endothelium cells (cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels), which is a gas that widens blood vessels and improves blood flow
It does this by activating the phosphorylation of eNOS which regulates NO generation
A wider, more dilated blood vessel allows for greater blood to flow through it, which means more nutrient rich blood is transported to your muscles, delivering the essentials it needs to repair and grow.
Theanine increases blood flow, which may increase the delivery of fat burning hormones like epinephrine and norepinephrine
Liver Health
Polyphenols in green tea can help improve liver health - it lowers lipid levels in the body and reduces the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Polyphenols enhance the liver’s ability to produce glutathione - Phase II liver detoxification neutralizes the byproducts of phase I liver detoxification and other remaining toxins
Under normal conditions, phase 2 liver detoxification enzymes produce low levels of glutathione - under times of high toxic stress the body needs a higher production of glutathione
