Juice cleanses supposedly rid our bodies of toxins and restore our digestive systems. Depending on the specific and sometimes copyrighted cleanse, you spend a couple days to a couple weeks consuming nothing but liquefied fruits, vegetables, and maybe some nut milk.
Since lots of people are pretty bad about eating enough fruits and vegetables to begin with, this may mean that during a juice cleanse, you’d be getting more vitamins and minerals than usual.
These are substances that your body needs to turn food into energy and to grow and maintain cells. Some even have antioxidant properties, which means that they can help prevent cellular damage under particular circumstances.
The benefits of these vitamins and minerals are real, but keep in mind that your body can only process a certain amount of them at once.
After that, you’ll just excrete the rest.
Research does show that eating fruits and vegetables rich in these substances can decrease your risk of some diseases in the long run.
The key phrase: “in the long run.” The best way to reap these benefits is to consistently eat five or more servings every day. One juice binge isn’t going to do much.
Consuming nothing but juice for a few days also means that you’d get a lot less fiber, fat, and protein -- and way fewer calories -- than normal.
Fats and proteins are just as essential for healthy cellular function as vitamins and minerals. And fiber in the diet is actually part of your colon’s normal cleansing system. It absorbs water (and water-soluble waste) in your intestines and moves everything on out.
Plus, fiber can slow down your body’s uptake of sugar, keeping your blood sugar levels more stable.
Without it -- and considering the high levels of fruit sugars and the limited calories involved in a juice diet -- you’ll feel extra hungry, and may experience dizzying blood sugar spikes and crashes.
A day or two of this shouldn’t do any harm to the average person, but restricting calories and nutrients for much longer than that can trigger starvation mode: Your body doesn’t know when it’s going to get more food, so it slows your metabolism down. When this happens too often, the change can be permanent.
So is it worth it? Psychologically, maybe. You’ll probably lose a little weight due to the decrease in calories, which might be what you’re looking for. And people around the world have been using short fasts to practice mindfulness for hundreds (if not thousands) of years.
But physiologically, juice cleanses don’t help clear toxins out of your body. The thing is that your liver and kidneys are natural detoxifiers.
They filter bad stuff out of your body all the time, but they need the full compliment of nutrients provided by a healthy diet in order to do so.

If you're looking for an easy way to quickly drop 5 pounds, instantly boost your health and energy, or reduce stress, a detox diet might sound like a good idea.
Take a look around your local health food store and you'll find an endless number of different cleansing supplements and detox kits that claim to purify your body from the inside out.
The real truth?
Detoxification diets are a scam.
The idea that you can simply slam back a lemon and cayenne pepper cleansing smoothie or pop back a few detox supplement pills to eliminate toxins from your body is pure pseudo-science designed to treat a condition that doesn't really exist.
There's no agreed on definition of exactly what a cleansing diet really is in the first place, nor any scientific explanation for how these supposed detoxifying products actually work.
Companies will simply throw around a vague term like toxins, claim that your organs (such as the liver, kidneys or colon) are accumulating them over time, and then tell you that their miracle detox kit, cleansing tea or whatever else will magically eliminate them.
The truth is that your body already has the systems in place to detoxify itself all on its own.
The liver, kidneys, lungs, skin and other organs already do this for you automatically without the need for special detox diets or supplements.
Some people may think that their detoxification diet really worked, but this is simply due to:
A) Losses in water weight and glycogen, since most detox diets are very low calorie. The weight will quickly pile back on once the regular diet is resumed.
B) The placebo effect. If someone really believes that their body was full of harmful substances and that they've now been detoxified, their mental state will surely improve.
C) The fact that their previous diet may have been very poor, and the increased consumption of fruits and veggies is now providing them with micro-nutrients they were previously lacking.
D) Many detox supplements are actually specifically created to deceive you into thinking they're working. (I.E. Some colon cleansing supplements actually contain agents that will turn your feces into a plastic-like substance so that it looks like you're pooping out intestinal plaque as the product claims)
Bottom line?
Detox diets, detox supplements and cleansing kits probably won't do you any harm, but they're simply unnecessary and a waste of money.
At the end of the day the only thing being cleansed will be your wallet.
You should definitely SUPPORT your body and organs by eating a healthy diet, exercising, sleeping properly and avoiding bad habits like excessive drinking/smoking, but beyond that there is no need to worry about the idea of eliminating toxins.

Detox Smoothie:
1 Banana
1 Cup coconut water
1 cup frozen pineapple
1 tbsp powdered ginger ( try half if you don't want it spicy!)
2 tbsp lemon juice
1-2 dashes cayenne pepper
1 tbsp chia seed (optional)
1 tsp maca powder
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Add ice until desired consistency. Enjoy!
TIP: I added 1 tbsp ginger and couldn't really drink it! I would suggest trying 1/2 tbsp first and then add more if you want the taste!

Today we’re going to talk about a unique way to cleanse a fatty liver. These tips may seem counterintuitive at first, but they work.
The liver is about 3 and a half pounds, sits over the right side of the body, and has over 500 different functions. When someone starts to develop a fatty liver, there can be no symptoms at all. But, eventually, the person may start to develop a gut, and as the condition becomes more advanced, they may start to notice symptoms of a fatty liver, such as:
• Fatigue
• Weakness
• Nausea
• Abdominal pain
• Right shoulder pain
• Pain in the upper right trap
• Headaches on the right side
• Pain in the right rhomboid
After years of inflammation from having a fatty liver, cirrhosis (scar tissue) builds up on the liver and can cause the person to lose the function of the liver and lose the ability to detoxify. It can also lead to the building up of excessive amounts of cortisol (the stress hormone) or excessive amounts of estrogen. A functional liver is really important in the detoxification and regulation of these two hormones.
The other problem when you have less liver function is you get less bile production. This situation can lead to the inability to break down toxic waste and fats, and the inability to absorb certain vitamins and nutrients like vitamins A, D, E, K, omega 3 fatty acids, and more.
There are two different categories of a fatty liver:
• Fatty Liver – caused by drinking too much alcohol.
• Non-Alcoholic Fatty liver (NAFL) – can be developed by eating poorly.
The big thing that causes a fatty liver is fructose in the form of high fructose corn syrup. It is 20x more likely to cause fatty liver than any other sugars. Two of the most important nutrients for correcting or reversing a fatty liver are methionine and choline, and they are in foods that are higher in fat and protein.
Fatty Liver Cleansing Tips:
• Do a combination of cruciferous vegetables and fattier proteins (egg yolks, fish – but make sure they are grass-fed)
• Get rid of the toxins and fat from the liver by doing the healthy ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting
• Take choline as a supplement (400 to 500mg)
• You can get methionine from quality protein

In this video, we’re going to talk about how you can detoxify thousands of chemicals from your body safely with food.
There are many toxins that we encounter in our environment—bisphenol A, PCBs, heavy metals, toxic plastics, and biosolids. Biosolids are treated sewage sludge. This contains over 60,000 toxic substances—this is the stuff that goes into a sewage treatment plant.
There are over 80,000 different toxins, known as xenobiotics, that you’re exposed to on a daily basis.
