Bhakti yoga the science of devotion
Bhakti Yoga The Science Of Devotion
Bhakti means devotion to the Almighty. Bhakti yoga deals with devotion to God and achieving the union with Him. This is the easiest of all yoga types. This branch of yoga teaches the relation between the devotee and the divine. It does not involve any technical or complicated procedures. There is no need of any intellectual capacity to master this yoga. It has appealed to the common man because it gives him a feeling security and develops a kind of reliance and dependence on the object of his devotion.
Bhakti yoga assumes that there is a higher power that has created the universe and is all-powerful. This power has the capacity to confer grace and mercy on him and thus protecting him from all the harms and evils. The devotee or bhakta is expected to make himself fit for receiving this divine grace. For this, he has to practice devotion and virtue. His ultimate goal should be to unite with this divine power and rest eternally in happiness and peace. The devotee surrenders all his motives and acts to the Divine Power. He renounces all responsibilities towards the good or bad consequences of all his actions and ascribes it to the will of the Supreme.
Devotion and faith play a vital role in this branch of yoga. The devotee or bhakta is supposed to be highly religious, should adopt a friendly stance towards all the other living beings including animals, read religious texts, concentrate on the symbol of the Divine, think and wish well for others etc. The beauty of this yoga lies in its simplicity. This has made it one of the most appealing of all the yoga types. Following this yoga develops the peace of mind in an individual. A peaceful individual will always think happy and prosperous thoughts and will thus lead a happy life. yoga,

Sadhguru on Bhakti Yoga - The Nature of Devotion
Right now, the only things that are in your experience are your body, your mind, and your emotions. You know them to some extent, and you can infer that if these three things have to happen the way they are happening, there must be an energy that makes them happen. Without energy, all this cannot be happening. For example, a microphone amplifies sound. Even if you don’t know anything about the microphone, you can infer that there is a source that powers it. These are the only four realities in your life: body, mind, emotion, and energy. Whatever you wish to do with yourself, it must be on these four levels. If you use your emotions and try to reach the ultimate, we call this bhakti yoga, the path of devotion. If you use your intelligence and try to reach the ultimate, we call this gnana yoga, the path of intelligence. If you use your body, or physical action to reach the ultimate, we call this karma yoga, the path of action. If you transform your energies and try to reach the ultimate, we call this kriya yoga, that means internal action. These are the only four ways you can work with yourself.
There was a time when the most dominant factor in a human being was his emotion. Today, emotion is not the most dominant part in you but it is still the most intense part in you. But emotion can get very intense. If not love, at least in anger you are intense. In some emotion you are capable of being intense. If I cannot make you get intense with love or joy, if I abuse you, you will become intense with anger at least – intense to a point where you will not sleep the whole night. If I tell you, “Please sit and stay awake. I will teach yoga,” you will drop off to sleep. But if I abuse you, you will sit awake the whole night. Angry people cannot sleep, isn’t it? So emotion has always been the dominant factor in human beings.
When you are overwhelmed by something or someone, you naturally become devout. But if you try to practice devotion, it creates problems because the line between devotion and deception is very thin – it will lead you into so many kinds of hallucinations. So you cannot practice devotion, but you can do certain things so that you arrive at devotion. If you just recognize one thing, you will naturally become a devotee: the cosmos is very large. You do not know where it begins or where it ends. There are hundreds of billions of galaxies. In this vast cosmos, this solar system is a tiny speck. If the solar system disappears tomorrow, it will not even be noticed in the cosmos. In this tiny speck of a solar system, planet earth is a micro speck. In this micro speck of a planet, the city you live in is a super-micro speck. In that, you are a big man! This is a serious problem of perspective. It is only because of this that there is no devotion in you. Or go out at night, switch off the lights and look at the sky. You don’t know where it begins or where it ends, and here you are a micro-super-micro speck of dust, spinning on a planet, not knowing where you come from or where you will go. It will be very natural for you to be devout. You will bow down to everything you see. If you just look at yourself with reference to the rest of the creation, there is no other way to go. It is only because people have lost perspective of who they are and what their place in this existence is, that they have become arrogant fools. With all our science, we have not figured even a single atom in its entirety. We know things in bits and pieces, we know how to use them but we do not know what it is. If you realize this, if you observe everything, a leaf, a flower, an atom, a bird, an animal, an ant, you cannot understand one thing in its entirety. Then you will bow down to everything. Even an atom is beyond your grasp. That is the nature of creation. If you pay attention to the nature of creation, how can you not be a devotee? One simple thing you can do is consider everything in this existence as higher than yourself. The stars are definitely higher, but try seeing the little pebble on the street as higher than yourself. Anyway, it is more permanent, more stable than you. It can sit still forever! If you learn to look at everything around you with attention and care, you will realize that you can not even figure the nature of an atom in its entirety. Everything is above your intelligence. Everything is higher than yourself, you will naturally become devout. A devotee knows things that you cannot even imagine. He can grasp things that you have to struggle with because there is not much of him within himself. When you are too full of self, there is no room for anything higher to happen. Devotion does not mean you have to be a temple-going, pooja-doing, coconut-breaking person. A devotee has understood what his place in the existence is. If you have understood this and are conscious of it, you will walk as a devout person. There is no other way to be. It is a very intelligent way to exist.

Bhakti Yoga: The Nine Limbs of Devotion
In the Ramayana, Lord Rama explains the nine types of devotion or penance to Shabri:
The nine steps of devotion, I impart to you. Listen you well and remember it always.
The first step to devotion (Bhakti) is to keep company of the saints (Satsang).
The second step is to enjoy listening to legends/discourses pertaining to the Lord.
Selfless service to the Guru’s lotus feet without any pride is the third step.
The fourth step is to earnestly sing praises of the Lord’s virtues with a heart clear of guile, deceit or hypocrisy.
Chanting My Name with steadfast faith is the fifth step as the Vedas reveal.
The sixth, is to practice self-control, good character, detachment from manifold activities and always follow the duties as good religious person.
The seventh step is to perceive the world as God Himself and regard the saints higher than the Lord.
The eighth, is a state (which one arrives at when one travels the first seven steps) where there is no desire left, but the gift of perfect peace and contentment with whatever one has. (In this state) one does not see fault in others, even in a dream.
In the ninth limb one has full faith in the Lord, and becomes (child-like) simple with no hypocrisy or deceit. The devotee has strong faith in the Lord with neither exaltation or depression in any life circumstance (but becomes equanimous).
Shri Ram adds that Shabri’s Bhakti is perfectly complete. Yet if anyone were to have taken even one step towards devotion, out of all nine, he/she would be very dear to the Lord.
How to Cultivate Bhakti (Devotion to God)? - Pravrajika Divyanandaprana
5 Ways to Bring more Bhakti into Your Life.
1. Japa Meditation
Practicing japa, or mantra recitation with mala beads, can train your mind to focus on a powerful sound vibration containing energies that are said to be embodiments of the Divine. Through japa practice, we deepen our connection with Divinity. And we begin to open space in our heart for the realization that we are, and always have been, one with the Divine.
One example of a mantra that can be used in japa meditation is “Om Namah Shivaya.” One of the interpretations of it is: “I bow to my highest self (pure consciousness) again and again.”
If you rest your awareness on your heart center as you repeat this mantra, you can cultivate a feeling of devotion even more easily. When you’re done with your practice, take some quiet time to rest in the spaciousness that has been brought to the surface by your practice, and notice any wisdom or guidance that may have been revealed in the process.
2. Prayer
Prayer is a powerful way in which we can connect with the Divine and can be practiced at numerous points throughout the day.
A Morning Prayer. If you feel inspired, you can begin your day by surrendering to the Divine as soon as you wake up. The Christian prayer, “Thy will, not mine, be done,” can work well in this context. Or perhaps a prayer in your own words, simply to hand the steering wheel over to the Divine for the day.
You can also begin the day by giving thanks for your life, for the day ahead, for all that you have. The Medieval German mystic Meister Eckhart said, “If the only prayer you say in your entire life is ‘Thank you,’ that would suffice.
Prayers for Those in Need. Bhakti Yoga invites us to see the Divine in everyone and everything…and to recognize that we’re all one. By sending loving thoughts and intentions to those in need through heartfelt prayer, we can begin to walk the path of true devotion.
Say Grace Before a Meal. Yogis have been blessing their food and expressing gratitude for their meals for centuries. Yoga teacher and author Sandra Anderson writes in an article for Yoga International, “The yogi’s [grace] acknowledges…our place in the interconnected web of creation, and the divine source of consciousness that animates everything.”
Here’s a simple approach I use in my own life: I thank all the beings that were involved in bringing this food to me, then I offer it up to the Divine.
3. Set Up An Inspiring Altar
Bhakti Yoga teacher and kirtan artist Sean Johnson says an altar is “a mirror of the heart.” It’s a physical representation of your inner landscape of devotion—a beautiful way to connect with, and celebrate your relationship with, the Divine.
You can create a sacred space by placing an image of a beloved teacher or aspect of the Divine (such as Ganesh, Lakshmi, Shiva, Saraswati) that resonates with you on a small table. Add inspiring spiritual quotes and other devotional items that help you express your devotion to the Divine. You can offer devotion with all of your senses here. Before you chant, meditate, practice yoga, or just breathe in front of your altar, try lighting a candle, or making an offering of flowers, fruit, or incense with a devotional heart.
As Krishna states in the Bhagavad Gita 9.26, “Whoever offers Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or a little water—that, so offered devotedly by the pure-minded, I accept.”
4. Loving Service to Others and the Planet
Over time, by combining the practice of Bhakti Yoga and Karma Yoga (selfless service), we can come to know Divine Love. This doesn’t have to be an overwhelming proposition. Through service to the local and global communities, in even just one area that profoundly touches our hearts, we can help create a difference in the world and in our own hearts. And it’s pretty easy to make time in your life for small acts of kindness, such as holding a door for someone, listening open-heartedly, letting a driver merge in front of you in traffic, cooking for your loved ones, or picking up trash on the street.
Through acts of devotional service, we acknowledge the Divinity within everyone and everything. And that’s another way to open ourselves to the realization of our own inner Divinity.
5. Chanting and Participating in Kirtan
A central practice of Bhakti Yoga, the word kirtan means “to sing the praises of the Divine.” When we participate in this communal practice, we sing songs of praise to different gods and goddesses, or aspects of the Divine. The practice opens our hearts and facilitates a sense of connection to the Divine; it has a powerful effect on the people and other sentient beings all around you.

Importance of Bhakti (Devotion) - Pravrajika Divyanandaprana
Bhakti-Yoga is a real, genuine search after the Lord, a search beginning, continuing, and ending in love. One single moment of the madness of extreme love to God brings us eternal freedom. Bhakti, says Nârada in his explanation of the Bhakti-aphorisms, is intense love to God; When a man gets it, he loves all, hates none; he becomes satisfied for ever; This love cannot be reduced to any earthly benefit, because so long as worldly desires last, that kind of love does not come; Bhakti is greater than karma, greater than Yoga, because these are intended for an object in view, while Bhakti is its own fruition, its own means and its own end.
- Swami Vivekananda
Importance of Bhakti
Advaita, Visishtadvaita, and Dvaita are one in the emphasis on Bhakti to obtain God's grace. The fact that man alone, among the creatures of the world, grows vertically, where as the other creatures grow horizontally, indicates that he should also strive to grow taller in spiritual stature. Such an eminence in stature comes from Jnana which alone gives abiding peace or saanti. Man undergoes troubles and pains in a greater measure than other animals; but that is compensated for by this capacity to acquire Jnana, which makes for the realisation of Truth and the experiencing of Aananda or Supreme Saanti. Jnana itself begets Aananda and Jnanaananda is Parama mangalam. Isvara is of the nature of this Jnanaananda. He is the Paramataman in whom all auspicious qualities are fully affirmed in a superlative measure. Even as the ocean is the repository of all waters, Isvara is fullness, the All. There is no other to him. He is the All with out a second. That is Advaita. Idam Sarvam Purusha Eva, all this is the Paramatman, says the Sruti. Sri Sankara expounds this truth with Yukti(logic) and Anubhava(experience).
But mere intellectual comprohension of it is not enough. It must be realised as a fact in one's own experience. For such realisation grace of God is a pre-requisite. Isvaraanugrahaadeva Pumsaam Advaita Vaasana. We begin with a feeling of distinctness from God. The predicament of worship is one of duality of Deity and Devotee. But even then the devotee does not feel that God is external to him and to the Universe; He has the consciousness that God is imminent in himself and in every particle of the world, in-dwelling every where and in everything, how ever minute. Our duty is worship Him in this way with devotion, and if we do so, He reveals His true nature to us. Bhagavan says :
BHAKTYAA MAM ABHIJANAATI YAAVAAN YASCHAAMI TATVATAH
The word, BHAKTYAA, meaning through devotion, shows that bhakthi is the means for the realisation of the truth of God's nature. Advaita, Visishtadvaita, and Dvaita are one in this emphasis on Bhakti to obtain God's grace. To whatever school we belong, we should invoke that grace through Bhakti, leaving it to Him to reavel the truth of His nature. All Achaaryas have stressed this need for Bhakti.
This devotion must evidence itself in fulfilling God's commands in observing the duties laid on us in the Vedaas. To say 'I have devotion to God', and not to act upto His commands is meaningless. Performance of prescribed duties, Vihitikara-maanushtaana, is the sign of true devotion. Doing one's Karma, one should dedicate it to God. Obligatory duties are Nitya and Naimittika. Vaishnavites significantly refer to them as Aajna Kainkarya. Such performance of Karmas as detailed in the Vedaas is true Isvara Aaradhana. They not only bring about personal merit, but also secure the welfare of the whole world. Thus Karma, Bhakti, and Jnana do constitute the scheme of salvation.

Relationship with God | The Science of Bhakti - Part 1 | Swami Mukundananda
How do we begin devotion? If we can realize what God does for us our love for God will also develop. We (soul) are eternal not by our own prowess but because the eternal God is sitting inside the soul and granting it eternality. We exist because of Him. The more we realize the graces we have received, the more we will grow in devotion.
Our connection with him is since eternity. So what is our relationship with Him? We are used to saying He is our father we are His children. This is one level of understanding of our relationship with God. If we are His children we should be like Him?
From an elephant to a baby elephant is born, from a giraffe a baby giraffe is born. We do not have deers being born from dogs and cats being born from horses. So if we are God's children why are we not like him? So how come we are children of God?

Keep the Bhakti Out | Sadhguru
Sadhguru explains in a program why he is not working to propagate devotion. Someone who has gone through modern education is generally incapable of devotion because they have been trained to dissect everything. Not that devotion is impossible for people today, but without the proper context it can lead to hallucination. When a person goes beyond the limitations of his intellect, then devotion will happen naturally.

BHAKTI the highest form of intelligence and the sweetest way to be - Sadhguru about devotion
An unconditional love is bhakti.
-problem is if you start loving the person next to you, you start getting into all kinds of entanglements with that person
-Bhakti Yoga shifted the focus of your bhakti to something far away, so that you don't get entangled.
-The object of bhakti is not important. The intensity of your feeling is what's important.
-Bhakti means devotion which means to dissolve.
-Devotion is not only the sweetest way to be, it is also the highest form of intelligence.
-if you are sensible enough to see that something far bigger than you is constantly in function, then you are naturally a devotee there is no other way to be.
-devotion does not mean that I have to bow down to you or touch your feet or sing your praises. In every way I live for you - that’s devotion

Hindu Academy aims to promote a Comprehensive and Rational vision of Hinduism incorporating ideas of Religious Pluralism, Spiritual Humanism, and resonance between Science and Spirituality. It operates with the education establishments by working with schools colleges and universities as well as in the mainstream media.
The role and relevance of Hinduism in contemporary society
Hinduism has a great deal to contribute towards the spiritual health of the modern world. Its inherent pluralistic teachings offer the best resolution to how people of different religions can co-exist peacefully in a multi-faith society. Hinduism even allows for spirituality to be explored in non-religious modes, making teachings relevant and interesting for the youth of today. Family values promoted by Hinduism can foster more stable family units and better community cohesion. The reconciliation between the truth claims of a science-oriented worldview and a religiously oriented worldview is obligatory in this century. The Hindu Academy invokes findings at the cutting edge of modern sciences to promote this reconciliation.

Himalayan Master Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanath. The flavor of devotion in India, called bhakti. Details about Anandamayi Ma, Mahavatar Babaji (Shiva-Goraksha-Babaji), and the Avatars of the Himalayas. The knowing of a true master.
***
Yogiraj is considered an illumined living master and solar seer, and helps sincere practitioners of yogic meditation awaken to higher levels of consciousness through chakra awakening/activation and esoteric practices of Himalayan yoga.
Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanath was born on May 10, 1944 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. He has been meditating since the age of 3, and spent his early years in the Himalayas amongst the HamsaNath yogis, in whose presence he was transformed. The divine transformation flowered after his deep and personal experiences in 1961 and 1967 with the yogi-christ Mahavatar Shiv-Goraksha-Babaji, the same spiritual master described in Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi. He has a wife of 30+ years, Gurumata Shivangani, with whom he built by hand the Hamsa Yoga Sangh Ashram (Spiritual Retreat) outside the city of Pune, near Bombay, India. They have two sons, and two grandchildren.
Yogiraj teaches yogic meditation for the evolution of human consciousness. These perennial practices of yoga are the most ancient closely guarded sacred practices of the Himalayan yogis and masters from time immemorial. They help the practitioner gradually transform him/herself into the likeness of his/her own divinity.
This ancient art and science has been a way of life for rare yogis and ascetics of India and abroad who have sacrificed everything in the search for their own inner Truth, their inner Godessence. Today, Yogiraj demonstrates in his own life and livingness, that powerful spiritual practice can be integrated with family life and a career. By the blessings of Babaji, Yogiraj teaches these techniques, which he collectively calls The Alchemy of Total Transformation to sincere seekers throughout the world, who wish to integrate these practices into their daily life, without the necessity of giving up worldly pursuits.
These techniques are called:
1. Mahavatar Babaji's Kriya Yoga (N.B., the exact same kundalini kriya originally given to Lahiri Mahasaya in the 19th century)
2. Siddhanath Surya Yoga - A dynamic osmosis of solar healing. Pranic healing with solar power.
3. Siddhanath Hamsa Yoga - The Way of the White Swan.
