IHP Learning Series - Traditional Healing Practices Within the Western Medical System
This video covers some of the reasons for the poor health status of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. The use and effectiveness of traditional healing programs in health systems across Canada will be looked at, especially in regard to helping patients deal with their pain and addictions.
Indigenous healing and Western medicine: battle rages on
Indigenous healing and Western medicine: battle rages on
Writing and videography by: Sarah George
Long before Europe staked its claim on North America, First Nations people freely inhabited the continent. They hunted, they gathered, they took care of the land and the land took care of them.
It was before small pox, cholera, measles, influenza, tuberculosis and the common cold took hold in Canada and wiped out entire tribes.
With the diseases came the European health care system, which gave the Indigenous ways the boot, in an attempt to assimilate the First Nations into a more European and “white” mold. Up until the 1950s, many Indigenous healing practices were outlawed in Canada, even though they had been around longer than the laws forbidding them.
After years of oppression, some First Nations are making a push for Western medicine to realize it can live side-by-side and in accordance with Indigenous healing.
“When you get a pill from the doctor, if you look at the ingredients, it’s the same thing as the willow bark or the other herbs I’ve mentioned,” Myeengun Henry, a Chippews Elder, said.
Henry also says people were a lot healthier back when they relied solely on indigenous ways. “We didn’t have diseases like we do now, they came with the Europeans. We had a health care system before they came and we lived a lot longer,“ Henry said.
Indigenous healing is rooted in prevention, not reaction. It is based upon the medicine wheel. The medicine wheel is broken into four quadrants, red, white, yellow and black, the four colours of man.
Native studies teacher and member of the Iroquois, Joyce Jonathan-Crone, says it encompasses so much more than the aforementioned. “It also represents north, south, east and west. It also represents summer, spring, fall and winter and one earth element in each quadrant,” Crone said.
Each quadrant represents a part of a person (physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual). Each one must be whole in order to achieve full health. If even one of the quadrants is out, it throws everything off.
“It’s like going through life on a block,” Henry said, as he demonstrated with his hands, “We say, if you round that all out, you’re healthier, you live longer, life goes a lot smoother.”
First Nations utilize many different ceremonies, such as smudging. Smudging is used to ward off negative energy around the body. Negative energy that can cause anxiety, depression and even headaches. Anyone can smudge; they do not have to be First Nations. Sage is lit and the flame extinguished and then the smoke is directed towards the afflicted parts of the body, usually the head, eyes and ears. To close, smoke is put over the heart.
Other ceremonies include healing circles, sweat lodges and the pipe ceremony. During a healing circle, members of the community, an affected victim and an offender will come together in a circle, in order to fix the relationship between all of the parties. In addition to focusing on healing the relationships, the circle focuses on the offender and the underlying cause of their offence. For example, if alcohol or a past of sexual abusive contributed, it will be discussed.
Sweat lodges are Native American saunas, designed to help the afflicted expel toxins and negativity from their bodies. The lodge is covered in animal hides and the entrance faces east and a fire pit. Each new day begins in the east with the rising of the sun; the source of life, power and healing wisdom.
The pipe ceremony can only be held by elders or healers. In the pipe ceremony, tobacco is placed inside the pipe and lit. The person will then pray to Creator, their god, and ask for guidance on how to heal a person or just to meditate on their own problems. The gift of healing is bestowed upon the people by Creator and all of their abilities and guidance comes from him.
This movement has been met with resistance, mostly from those who believe a doctor has earned the right to diagnose and treat people.
Nursing student Jennifer Sutherland thinks it takes more than herbs to cure someone. “Doctors go through at least eight years of medical residency and schooling in order to have the right to diagnose and treat patients and I don’t think that someone working off of pure herbs can be as effective,” Sutherland said.
It isn’t an impossible feat, according to Renee Linklater, head of the Aboriginal Outreach program and CMAH and author of “Decolonising Trauma”. As long as it’s done with caution. “Some herbs can react badly with antibiotics and medications, so we have to know our herbs really, really well. It’s a safety thing, but it can work,” Linklater said. Linklater has seen the success healing ceremonies can have on people. Success medication alone cannot accomplish, because medication can’t repair relationships and help heal the emotional side of one’s self. One thing both sides can agree on, laughter is the best medicine.

Dr. Hoban - Western Medicine vs. Holistic Medicine
In Holistic Medicine, we work as a team, we act as a coach, not an authority. The definition of health is the elimination of the disease, that's like saying you define light by the absence of darkness. In Western Medicine, they treat the disease, in Holistic Medicine, we treat the patient. Maybe the symptoms are the same but the causes are different in every person.
From PHA's 2012 International PH Conference
We know that vasodilator treatment improves exercise capacity and symptoms in patients with pulmonary hypertension. Besides medical treatments and modifications to lifestyle, there are several nutritional and dietary supplements on the market that claim to reduce leg swelling, enhance breathing and increase exercise capacity in people with PH and heart failure. This session will help raise greater awareness about various nutritional, herbal and dietary supplements in the context of PH.

Cancer - The Forbidden Cures Documentary - Healing naturallyy reminds us that natural based alternatives to heal cancer are not new in fact they've been around for many decades.
Modern day holistic or natural-based cancer healing has provided us with many more plant, herb, spice, super food, cancer fighting diet transformation and holistic therapy solutions for healing cancer naturally.
This critical exposé into some of the pioneers of the holistic cancer fighting movement is essential to us understanding the politics of healing cancer in today's world. Because the truth is that a person who is stricken with potentially deadly cancer, is actually fighting a multiple trillion dollar profit center called curing cancer to the medical profession. Tragically, the Western doctors that a cancer patient typically goes to have been trained to prescribe radiation therapy or chemotherapy and surgery as the only means to cure cancer.
Even though the latest shocking findings that conventional Western medicine procedures including chemotherapy and radiation therapy and surgery are proven to be 97% ineffective in curing cancer. The multinational pharmaceutical industry and the physician's journals that fund all of Western sciences Cancer research are stacking the deck in favor of their own profit centers being multi-thousand dollar drug treatments and astronomical price surgical procedures for fighting cancer.
Sadly all of the holistic health practitioners mentioned in this acclaimed documentary on fighting cancer were driven to continue their practice in Mexico before they died. even though in several cases there were over 1000 cancer patients that were healed through their pioneering efforts into fighting cancer pharmaceutical and the medical industry driven them out of business in the United States. in fact it is a felony in several states to provide natural based holistic care to cure cancer in the US.
This frightening healthcare hypocrisy in regards to healing cancer continues to this day. as stated before the business of curing cancer is a multitrillion dollar industry. one month supply of chemotherapy alone cost several thousand dollars. the doctors are getting illegal kickbacks to prescribe chemotherapy of $1500.00 from the pharmaceutical industry.
in addition to become a doctor there is no requirement for single nutrition class. this is an absolute disgrace to intentionally skew some the world's most brightest people into the drugs are the only solution funnel of profitable death to the patient. Remember 97% of Western medicine's approach to treating cancer is ineffective, and most of these patients died of cancer.
This is quite shocking especially considering that most of the cancer patients were sent home to die by the Western medical profession had been healed by these amazing pioneering alternative healthcare practitioners.
Again we are talking about the amazing prospects of healing cancer naturally using only health-based diet transformations to fight cancer. Add some herbs and spices super foods and complementary alternative therapies and nothing more.
