The sight of piercing needles through the skin in specific areas of the body may appear to be painful, but acupuncture is actually an ancient form of pain relief treatment that improves the flow of energy throughout the body. Acupuncture originated in China thousands of years ago and is still being practiced until now. The National Institutes of Health has sponsored several studies on the effects of acupuncture as pain relief treatment for conditions such as arthritis and other ailments that produce chronic pain. While western scientists suspect that acupuncture may stimulate the release of chemicals to soothe pain or prompt the body's natural healing abilities, the patient's faith or belief in acupuncture is a big factor in the procedure's success.
According to Dr. Hayes Wilson, chief rheumatologist at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and national medical adviser to the Arthritis Foundation, says that acupuncture can work for anybody. However, he said that,“...it's going to work for the people who believe in it.” Many pain relief treatments are effective because of the patient's belief in them. People who don't believe that they're going to get better are less likely to get through.
Since the procedure involves risks inherent in needle use, however, there are some conditions where acupuncture is not recommended, such as those with bleeding disorders as well as people who are taking blood-thinning medications. There is also a high risk of spreading infectious disease, accidental piercing of organs, minor bleeding and broken or forgotten needles.
According to Dennis Turk, professor of anesthesiology and pain research at the University of Washington School of Medicine, people make sense out of noxious sensations and determine how bothersome they really are with the help of the brain. Several factors can affect how people perceive sensations, what they decide to do about them, and how they interact with respect to their environment.
One psychological factor that can intensify pain perception is stress. Muscles tend to become tense and may affect tissues that are already tender. Emotionally, the pressure may amplify pain perception. People who are distressed may interpret situations to be more difficult and may lead them to avoid certain types of activities because they are afraid that it will make their pain become worse.
A change in the source of stress can help alleviate the pressure. In the case of a frequent nagging from your spouse, try to find a way to sit down and discuss the problem with open communication. If changing the source of tension is not possible, consider wholesome and positive distraction such as watching a movie, listening to music, or spending time with friends. Pleasurable activities can shift the focus away from the pain temporarily.
Relaxation is another pain relief treatment. Meditation, yoga, deep breathing techniques, progressive muscle relaxation, massage, Tai Chi, and visualization have been proven to be effective pain relief treatment.
Joining support groups or getting individual counseling also help in coping with stress or ailment. However, while there is enough evidence to prove that people who join support groups experience dramatic improvements in their physical and emotional well-being, nevertheless, people who are not open in discussing about their problems may not benefit from this type of stress-management strategy. Different techniques apply for different people.

Acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2010
URL:
Description: Acupuncture and moxibustion are forms of traditional Chinese medicine widely practised in China and also found in regions of south-east Asia, Europe and the Americas. The theories of acupuncture and moxibustion hold that the human body acts as a small universe connected by channels, and that by physically stimulating these channels the practitioner can promote the human body's self-regulating functions and bring health to the patient. This stimulation involves the burning of moxa (mugwort) or the insertion of needles into points on these channels, with the aim to restore the body's balance and prevent and treat disease. In acupuncture, needles are selected according to the individual condition and used to puncture and stimulate the chosen points. Moxibustion is usually divided into direct and indirect moxibustion, in which either moxa cones are placed directly on points or moxa sticks are held and kept at some distance from the body surface to warm the chosen area. Moxa cones and sticks are made of dried mugwort leaves. Acupuncture and moxibustion are taught through verbal instruction and demonstration, transmitted through master-disciple relations or through members of a clan. Currently, acupuncture and moxibustion are also transmitted through formal academic education.

Japanese Acupuncture and Moxibustion: How It Works
Are you looking for an alternative therapy or alternative medicine to treat your back pain? Perhaps you are curious about acupuncture or moxibustion and how acupuncture treatment actually works. Acupuncture and moxibustion is TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine but Japanese acupuncturists have been using it for centuries as well. Acupuncture for back pain or acupuncture for headaches, it can heal almost any ailment.
If you are not ready for the acupuncture needles then maybe try acupressure or a shiatsu massage first.
Moxibustion is used to treat many illnesses or aches and pains as well. It is not invasive though. You simply either wave the smoke wand above the area that is causing pain or discomfort. Or you can also use the stick ons…but beware that you use those until they burn down. It won’t hurt you but there is some discomfort.
The two kinds of moxibustion I have purchased and recommend are listed below.

Acupuncture Treatment
Acupuncture is a complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine. In this treatment, fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes. Acupuncturists sometimes use methods without needles, such as tui na massage, to treat patients. The tradition belief based upon Acupuncture is that an energy or life force, flows through the body in channels called meridians, if these meridians do not flow freely through the body, this can cause illness. They believe that by acupuncture we can restore the flow and thereby restoring the health acupressure massage therapy arouses and operates the body’s healing energies to prevent illness. Acupuncture works by stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles. As a result, the body produces natural substances such as pain-relieving endorphins. These naturally released substances are likely responsible for the beneficial effects experienced with acupuncture. Acupressure massage therapy practitioners will press on specific points to promote energy flow to a part of the body that is experiencing disease or discomfort, enabling it to heal more quickly.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a treatment derived from ancient Chinese medicine. Fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes.
It is used in many NHS GP practices, as well as in most pain clinics and hospices in the UK.
Acupuncture is often seen as a form of complementary or alternative medicine (CAM).
How acupuncture works
Western medical acupuncture is the use of acupuncture following a medical diagnosis. It involves stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles.
This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain-relieving endorphins. It's likely that these naturally released substances are responsible for the beneficial effects experienced with acupuncture.
A course of acupuncture usually creates longer lasting pain relief than when a single treatment is used.
Traditional acupuncture is based on the belief that an energy, or life force, flows through the body in channels called meridians. This life force is known as Qi (pronounced chee).
Practitioners who use acupuncture in the traditional way believe that when Qi does not flow freely through the body, this can cause illness. They also believe acupuncture can restore the flow of Qi, and so restore health.

Study: Acupuncture works as well as medicine for chronic pain in some
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Those little needles used in acupuncture might be far more effective at treating pain than previously thought according to researchers at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.
They compared people who went to the emergency room for pain treatment, and compared acupuncture to drugs used to treat pain.
Those who came in had everything from back pain, to migraine headaches, to sprained ankles and they found some surprising results.
So, how does this therapy work, and why?
Dr. Mary Ann Barnes uses acupuncture for a number of health concerns in her practice. She specializes in both family and integrative medicine at Saint Elizabeth Healthcare.
She admits however that when it comes to why her patients use it most often:
“Pain is probably the most common thing because pain is out there. A lot of people have it, and we don't frequently have good answers in western medicine,” said Dr. Barnes.
Dr. Barnes showed how tiny needles are placed in different areas of the body to balance what's called “the meridian system” in the body.
These are considered the channels through which energy flows in the body, according to “ancient Chinese medicine.”
The study was the world’s largest controlled trial that used acupuncture in emergency departments and compared it to treatment with pain relieving medications.
Researchers found that in some, it worked just as well as medications in managing chronic pain.
However, for immediate relief, one was not better than the other.
This is interesting because it's not often used in something such as an emergency room, more often in outpatient settings.
Researchers followed up with patients 48 hours after they were treated with either medication or acupuncture to show these results.
This is now being considered more often, as doctors look for alternatives to drugs that can be addictive.

Acupuncture & Massage Therapy for Pain
Acupuncture may not be the magical ancient remedy cure-all, but it does appear that there is enough proof and a large population of happy patients that will tell you there is some truth to the practice. After all, there has to be some logic as to why poking yourself intentionally with needles has stuck around for over 2,500 years.
So what might you expect when entering your first acupuncture session? Your first appointment may seem to last awhile, but that is typically due to the fact that you and your doctor will spend time discussing any concerns and your symptoms. The needles themselves usually do not take more than 30 minutes to perform. Some patients feel immediate relief, energized and ready to take on whatever is thrown their way, while others tend to feel more relaxed and peaceful, yet tired. There are those who may not feel anything for the first few sessions, and may take several more treatments before a positive improvement can be felt. Recharged or drained, your overall battery will seem to thank you. The majority of patients report that no matter how they felt physically afterwards, mentally and emotionally they felt contentment, balance and happiness. Many also report a slight change in their sleeping and eating habits, along with a change in their bowel movements.
Cost for acupuncture can vary depending on which area you live in and if your acupuncturist accepts your specific insurance or not. When searching for a licensed practitioner, you can ask these questions when making an appointment to help determine which practice to visit. While there are many who may practice acupuncture, make sure you seek a licensed acupuncturist for your treatment. Whole Family Healthcare’s team consists of multiple licensed acupuncturists that are dedicated to helping you through your journey to a healthier you!

10 Years of Migraine Relieved Before Your Eyes!
Shawna has been experiencing severe jaw pain ever since her root canal 2 weeks ago. The pain has begun to propagate up her head to her temple and down through her neck and shoulder. She described her pain as a consistent 8 on a scale from 0 to 10. Simultaneously, she has been experiencing unrelated headaches daily for the last 10 years or so. She says the intensity of her daily headaches range from 4-5 to 8 out of 10 depending on the day. Her previous, futile, treatment attempts include seeing a neurologist, massage therapy, chiropractic work, acupuncture, and prescription headache medication. Before ASTR, Shawna describes her current overall pain as an 8 on a scale from 0 to 10. After just one session with Dr. Jacobs, her head pain was completely gone! When asked what she thought about ASTR treatment, Shawna said, “Great”.
Alright Shauna tell me what’s going on with your jaw and headache. So I had a root canal two weeks ago and I had a bite block in and when they, it was for about an hour when they took the bite block out I could, it took me a while to get my jaw to close and it was really painful. So you had muscle spasm after that, okay. That pain, that soreness in my jaw continued over the next couple of weeks we thought it was maybe an infection in the tooth still. But this past week the endodontic that I work for and my general dentist both figured out that there isn’t any more infection in the tooth.
1:00- The tooth is doing fine, it’s actually they think a TMJ issue, the pain is in my jaw, in my ear, rating up to my temple, my neck my shoulder. How much pain from 0-10, 10 is emergency room. Probably 8 consistently. 8 consistently, okay. For this week. For this week like no relief. No relief. Before it was I would probably say at a 6 I was uncomfortable. After the root canal? Yea. Do you have any history of TMJ like pain in your jaw before or. No but I have been grinding my teeth and clenching my jaw for a really long time. I’ve had a night guard for probably a year or two. Before that I didn’t, I just, but every morning I wake up I’m biting down on that night guard so. Oh okay. So give me a brief history of your headaches, what’s going on with that, how long is it? I’ve had headaches for about ten years. Ten years, okay.
